GRUNDY, Va. — Looking ahead to a huge contest on Nov. 7 with Haysi could have been expected from Honaker. It wasn’t a problem.
The undefeated Tigers picked up their ninth consecutive win with a 48-12 victory over Grundy at Nelson Memorial Field. The Tigers scored the first six times they had the football.
Quarterback Casey Dye was 8-of-15 passing for 203 yards and four touchdown passes, all coming in the first half. Jordan Smith was one of his favorite targets, catching three passes and two went for touchdowns.
“Casey and I had some really good chemistry together,” Smith said. "We work hard together during practice. He knows where I’m going and I know where he wants me to go.”
Another big target tight end Casey Harman also had three receptions and one was for a touchdown. Harman and Smith had developed into a solid duo for the Tigers.
“We are really big targets for Dye,” said Smith. “I think we both do a good job and we have other receivers that make some big contributions. I think it all starts with the running game and the line up front, if they do well it opens up the passing game.”
The Tigers rushed for 222 yards, led by Austin Smith with 120 yards on 15 carries. Austin Smith reached the end zone three times in the win.
Jacob McNutt scored the first Golden Wave touchdown on a 3-yard run. Dylan Wolford rushed for 118 yards for Grundy and scored the final TD on a 37-yard scamper.
“I thought we played about as well we could against very good football team,” Grundy coach Jeremy Ward said. “Honaker is well-coached, they're big and strong The biggest thing for us on defense we gave up too many big plays against a fast team and that's hard to overcome.”
Honaker will have the showdown with Haysi on Friday. Grundy will host Richlands.
