WELCH — In a match-up of previous unbeaten Class AA teams, River View never trailed Saturday night in recording a thrilling 34-26 win over the first year consolidation Mingo Central Miners in a late-ending contest at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
The victory by the Raiders also gave River View head coach the 200th win of his career.
River View’s Trey Lockhart intercepted a Miners’ pass to set the stage for the Raiders’ initial score.
Starting at the Raiders’ 20, quarterback Jacob Muncy took only five plays to find the end zone, with the capper coming on a 69-yard aerial to a wide open LeShon Benton with a 6:33 remaining in the opening frame.
Benton’s extra point kick made the lead 7-0 before the near capacity crowd had time to settle into their seats.
Mingo Central answered with a 5-play, 53-yard march that Joe Canterbury brought to fruition on a 5-yard burst up the middle at the 5:01 mark of the first period.
The all-important PAT pass try failed, leaving the Raiders holding a slim 7-6 lead.
Muncy threw a swing pass to his left on River View’s next possession for a touchdown to Brandon Church with 54 seconds on the clock. Benton added the extra point for the 14-6 lead.
Mingo Central answered with Joe May racing around the edge from four yards with 10:33 on the clock, but the extra point missed again, leading the Miners trailing 14-12.
John Bailey put the Raiders on the board again with a 20-yard burst off left tackle at the 7:32 mark before the break, and Benton’s extra point a 21-12 margin.
With time running out before intermission, Miners’ signal-caller Ashton Cline threw over the middle for a 6-yard scoring strike to Corey Daniels, and then connected with Josh Staton for the two-point conversion, and the Raiders led 21-20 at halftime.
“We challenged our kids at halftime to correct some of the things we did (in the first half),” Estep said. “We challenged them to be in position for coverage and to not have the penalties we had. We really called them out and challenged them, and they accepted that challenge.”
The result was the Raiders scoring on their first two possessions of the second half.
It started with fullback Trey Bailey capping a 9-play, 40-yard drive at the 6:14 mark of the third stanza with a 1-yard dive on 4th and goal, and Benton added another extra point for the 28-20 advantage.
Chad Franklin then picked off a Mingo Central pass and returned it to the 27. That set up what turned into the winning score, with freshman Jordan Wilson dashing 27 yards to his right for the 34-20 lead with 2:21 left in the third.
Mingo Central got the ball back early in the final period following a River View punt. Cline drove the Miners to the 14 before finally a wide-open May in the end zone with 5:24 left in the game to cut the margin to six.
The Miners had one more possession, moving from their own 28 to the Raiders’ 31 before turning the ball over on downs with 1:11 left on the clock.
With Mingo Central having no timeouts, the Raiders’ Muncy was able to kneel down to run out the clock, as the Raiders improved to 3-0 on the season.
River View will visit Man on Friday. The Miners (1-1) will travel to Westside on the same night.
