PRINCETON — In a game where yards were rolled up by the scores, points came at a premium Friday night as the River View Raiders downed the visiting Liberty Harrison Mountaineers 33-19 at Ann S. Hunnicutt Stadium.
The unbeaten Raiders never trailed in pushing their season slate to 5-0 with the win.
River View rolled up 422 yards of total offense on the evening, led by senior fullback Trey Bailey’s 184 yards and two scores.
Liberty netted 407 yards including 299 on the ground, led by junior quarterback Ty Noss’s 226 rushing, but could find the end zone only twice to go with a pair of field goals.
After a Mountaineer field goal attempt missed to end Liberty’s opening possession, it took only two plays for the Raiders to light the scoreboard.
On the second snap, quarterback Jacob Muncy, who completed 6 of the 11 passes on the evening, for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns, hit senior LeShon Benton with a quick pass at the Raider sideline.
The 6’4” Benton grabbed the aerial and raced down the side line for a 77 yard score at the 7:39 mark of the first, before kicking the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Liberty battled back, led by a 60-yard Noss gallop from one 20 to the other, to shut the deficit to 7-3 when Austin Trent kicked a 32-yard field goal with 4:04 showing in the inaugural frame.
After Noss picked off a Raider pass on the ensuing series, Trent booted a 26-yard field goal with 1:03 remaining to cut the count to 7-6.
The Raiders answered with an 8-play, 73-yard march that spanned the initial two quarters and was capped by a 1-yard Trey Bailey rush behind left guard.
Another 6 came with 1:59 showing before the break when Muncy passed to his left to senior Chad Franklin, who grabbed the pigskin and made a nice move inside to elude a defender and cap an 18 yard score.
A play fake by Muncy, followed by a pass to Benton tacked on the conversion for a 21-6 advantage at halftime.
River View stumbled away the pigskin on its first two possessions of the second half, with Noss and company making short work to find the end zone following the second turnover.
Noss ran for 11 and then 20 yards to cap the two-play drive, and with Trent’s conversion kick, the View lead was 21-13.
From that point, the Raiders running game kicked into high gear, as Brandon Church scored on a 12-yard burst with 3:41 left in the third and Bailey had a three-yard score at the 8:39 mark of the fourth.
James Pumphrey had a one-yard score sandwiched between those two touchdowns for the Mountaineers, on the first play of the final period.
Of his team’s second half running game, Raider head coach Mitchell Estep said, “We decided we were going to try to get that push up front and run the ball, eat up some clock and maybe score.”
Mountaineer head coach Robert Shields related, “It came down to tackling and blocking and I don’t think we did a very good job of it. Their fullback (Trey Bailey) ate us up on those traps.”
Riverview will entertain Wyoming East Friday night at Vic Nystrom Stadium. Liberty Harrison will visit Braxton County on the same night.
