FAYETTEVILLE — Heading into Friday night’s football action at Fletcher Arritt Memorial Stadium, Mount View was seeking its first win of the 2011 campaign.
It became evident, rather quickly, it wasn’t going to occur on Fayetteville’s watch.
The Class A No. 8 Pirates got a 58-yard touchdown jaunt from Elijah Lewis on their first play from scrimmage, igniting a 54-point first-half explosion that eventually led to a 60-26 dismantling of the Golden Knights.
Lewis and his backfield mate, Hunter Hernandez, combined for seven of Fayetteville’s eight first-half TDs, with Lewis rushing for 196 yards and four scores in the half and Hernandez amassing 182 yards and three tallies in the same time frame.
After limited action in a second half which was whittled to 8-minute quarters by coaches’ agreement, Hernandez finished with 17 carries for 229 yards and three scores, and Lewis also cracked the 200-yard barrier with 206 yards and four TDs on just 11 attempts.
Fayetteville (6-1) scored on all eight of its first-half possessions, which amounted to 31 total offensive plays.
Despite the Pirates’ offensive prowess, the Golden Knights (0-6) hung tough in the game’s early stages. An exciting 82-yard kickoff return by LaQuell Martin left the Knights trailing 14-6 at the 8:23 mark of the opening period, and a 46-yard middle screen TD pass from Brandon Towler to Maurice Brown made it 20-12 at the 3:52 mark.
The Pirates responded with a Lewis 31-yard TD gallop and a 1-yard scoring burst by Aaron Krise to finish the first quarter ahead 35-12 and set the stage for the blowout.
“It was physical football (on Fayetteville’s part),” said Mount View coach Leon Gravely. “They executed and outplayed us tonight.
“They’re a good football team. We had a chance to make some plays (early) and didn’t, and that hurt us. We’ve got to play better defense and just get better.”
“We came out and didn’t want ‘em to hang around all night long, so our kids played our game we know how to play,” said Fayetteville coach Frank Spangler. “We executed pretty well offensively.
“Our kids are anxious to get to the rest of the season.”
Brown, who finished with 88 rushing yards and 46 receiving yards, tacked on a 16-yard score to leave Mount View trailing 48-18 late in the first half. The Knights got a fourth-quarter score on a 49-yard gallop by Martin down the FHS sideline.
The Pirates got a 1-yard TD plunge with under a minute to play from Tracey Lovins, who ended up with nine carries for 89 stripes.
Fayetteville’s Jonathan Cody recovered a second-quarter Mount View fumble, the only miscue from either team on the evening. That set up the second TD by Lewis, a 23-yard sprint which moved the margin to 42-12 early in the period.
Mount View (0-6) plays at Van on Friday.
Fayetteville (6-1) is idle next week before hosting No. 2 Buffalo on Oct. 21.
“We hope we have enough gas in the tank for that game,” said Spangler. “We hope to have it cranked up in a couple of weeks.”
