Martin carries Knights to first win

GARY — The Mount View Golden Knights picked up their first win of the season Friday night, defeating the Liberty (Raleigh) Raiders 23-6 in Glen Daniel. LaQuell Martin ran for unofficially 215 yards in the contest to lead the Knights to victory.
Head coach Todd McCoy, in his second year at the helm of the Golden Knights, said it is good to get a ‘W.’
“It was a big monkey off our back,” McCoy said. “We felt like we should have won two of the first three and we put it on the kids and said this is a must win situation. This team from the get-go expected to be a playoff team and after our start they were really low, starting 0-3. They didn’t know what to do so we told them to quit worrying and just go out and play and the wins will take care of themselves.”
McCoy said he knew that Mount View matched up well with Liberty and another interesting factor was they were playing on the road.
“We play better away from home. I don’t know if it’s the home crowd, or the mamas and daddys in the stands, but we seem to be more relaxed on the road,” McCoy pointed out.
According to McCoy he got a complete game out of all his players including an offensive line where two starters were out.
Mount View travels to Wyoming East this week. Last year the Knights ended a long losing streak by defeating the Warriors and McCoy told his team they can beat them again.
“I’m trying to convince our team these are the same kids we beat last year,” McCoy said.
“They didn’t lose much and we didn’t lose much. All will be fine if we forget about the records and just go out and play. We’re going to have to put a game together like we did Friday night.”
