WELCH — The fourth-ranked River View Raiders came from behind Friday night to record a 31-28 win over a Marcus Schofield-led Wyoming East Warriors at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
The Warriors, now 2-3, led from only 2.5 minutes into the contest until Trey Bailey scored on a 2-yard burst with 5:01 remaining in the final chapter.
That marked the first time this season the 6-0 Raiders have trailed.
The Warriors took the opening kickoff and moved from their 20 to the River View 49 in six plays before Schofield took a handoff and raced off the left side untouched for the 49-yard bell ringer. Chris Cecil booted the PAT for an early 7-0 Wyoming East lead with 9:30 showing in the opening period.
River View answered wtih a nine-play, 50-yard march that was capped on a John Bailey 14-yard run up the middle at the five-minute mark of the first. The PAT kick failed, leaving East in the lead 7-6.
At the 5:33 mark of the second, Schofield equalled his opening touchdown of 49 yards with a like dash up the middle to put the Warriors up 14-6 following Cecil’s successful extra point kick.
On the ensuing kickoff, River View freshman Jordan Wilson fielded the ball at his own eight, raced up the middle and completed the 92-yard return with the touchdown.
That score came as 5:17 showed on the first-half clock and left the East advantage at 14-12 when a pass try for the conversion failed.
The Warriors made quick work of extending the lead to 22-12 when Schofield went four yards up the gut on the heels of a 44-yard run around right end. To cap the drive, Schofield ran the extra points for the 22-12 intermission lead.
Wyoming East ran for 260 first-half yards in taking the lead, paced by Schofield’s 213 yards on the ground.
Early in the third period, linebacker Jamie Mills recovered a Wyoming East fumble at the Raider 41 to set up a River View score that would cut into the Warrior lead.
On third and goal at the Wyoming East 6, quarterback Jacob Muncy rolled to his right and flipped a pass to Trey Bailey for the six-yard score.
Despite the missed conversion, River View trailed 22-18 at the 3:53 mark of the third.
The Warriors charged right back to again take the lead to 10 points when quarterback Zach Whitten scored on a quarterback sneak with 33 ticks remaining in the third.
On only the second play of the Raiders’ ensuing series, and the first play of the final stanza, Muncy passed over the middle to a wide-open Brandon Thomas for a 57-yard TD with only 10 seconds gone in the fourth, cutting the Warrior lead to 28-24.
The Raider defense held East to a three-and-out, but fumbled a punt return try and freshman Nik Walker recovered for the Warriors at the River View 44.
Four plays later, it was the Raiders’ turn to come away with a turnover, as sophomore Joseph McClanahan recovered a Warrior fumble at the East 44.
Quarterback Muncy guided his team on a nine-play, 56-yard drive that would produce the winning points.
On a fourth-and-five at the Wyoming East 23, Muncy connected with Brandon Church on a 17-yard screen pass that set up Trey Bailey’s two-yard score two plays later.
That touchdown came at the 5:01 mark of the fourth, and following Leshon Benton’s extra point kick, River View had the lead for the first time of the evening, 31-28.
The Raiders stopped the Wyoming countians one last time on downs at the River View 36 to seal the victory.
Related veteran River View head coach Mitch Estep of his club’s second-half performance, where River View outscored East 19-6 for the comeback win, “Our defense just stepped up [in the second half], and our offense is so creative and so talented.”
Estep continued, “I’m grateful with the win. Don’t get me wrong. But more than that, I’m just proud of their performance. They are so intense. You just don’t coach that.”
Third-year East head coach Gary Poindexter related, “We can’t say anything bad about our kids’ performance. They gave it all they had. We just had a couple of mistakes in the second half.”
Of his team overall, Poindexter said, “We’re very close to being a very good team.”
Wyoming East will entertain PikeView next Friday night, while the Raiders will be open before hosting Midland Trail for homecoming on Oct. 14.
