Seven turnovers, but Patriots still top Knights

WELCH — Mount View recovered six fumbles and picked off an Independence pass, but the Golden Knights still dropped a 21-20 decision to to the Patriots on homecoming night at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
Mount View took a 12-0 lead on a 25-yard pass from Elijah Collier to Jaquane Imes and a 1-yard plunge by Joe Hayes. Independence returned the ensuing kick by Markus Guy 90 yards for a touchdown to narrow the Patriots’ deficit to 12-7 at the break.
Ryan Brandstetter put Independence up for a few seconds with a 4-yard run in the third quarter, but Trevon Richardson followed with a 65-yard kick return for a score.
Independence (3-0) scored the deciding touchdown in the fourth on a 57-yard run by Chris Mills. Adam Tolliver’s third extra point of the game was the difference in the game.
Mount View (1-2), which missed an extra point and couldn’t convert a two-point conversion, will spend the next five weeks on the road, beginning on Friday at Liberty-Raleigh.
