DELBARTON — The quarterbacks had big days and big numbers as Mingo Central turned back Summers County 68-28 in a Class AA first-round game of the state football playoffs.
Mingo Central's Stephen Hammond fired five touchdown passes, including a 95-yard strike to Tyler Grimmette early in the first quarter. He also had TD aerials of 21, 12, 6 and 53 yards, and finished the day 14 of 19 through the air for 298 yards.
For good measure, Hammond found the end zone on quarterback keepers of 1 and 2 yards in the second quarter. Deonte Joplin led the Miners' running attack with 9 carries for 78 yards.
Summers County's Matt Ryan put himself into the school record books by setting a new school single-season rushing record of 1,876 yards, which broke Scott Jackson's record from 1995. Jackson accomplished his total in 11 games while Ryan topped it in 10. Mount View forfeited the regular-season finale with the Bobcats.
Ryan got Summers into the scoring column in the second quarter on a 49-yard run, and also had TD breakaways of 58 and 57 yards in the third quarter. In all he gained 248 yards on 18 carries. He was also 6 of 10 passing for 50 yards.
Dacota Thomas scored the Bobcats' final touchdown on a xx-yard fumble return. Kicker Jacob Persiani was successful on all four PATs.
Greg Shrewsbury picked up 61 yards on 18 carries for Summers, which concludes its season at 8-3.
Mingo Central scored four times in the last 40 seconds of the second quarter, twice following successful onside kicks and another on a fumble return.
The Miners (9-2) will play Bluefield in the playoff quarterfinals next week.
