GARDNER — The Liberty Raiders established control on the gridiron Friday night at PikeView High School and did not let up as they defeated the Panthers by a final score of 42-13.
Liberty quarterback Hunter Wright was 11 of 15 through the air for 225 yards with six touchdowns and one interception.
The Raiders also found success on the ground as they rushed for more than 250 yards as a team. Christian Whitaker had 97 yards rushing on 14 carries.
PikeView tried to establish a passing threat with new starting quarterback Justin Hopper. Hopper was 7 of 25 for 105 yards but had two interceptions.
PikeView was led on the ground by Danny Brown who had 16 rushes for 56 yards. Ty Hoston rushed for 20 yards on six attempts and had a touchdown. Christian Taylor rushed for PikeView’s only other touchdown. He had 20 yards on six attempts.
“This is another game I cannot explain,” said PikeView head coach Bobby Wyatt. “When we started they scored and then we scored, I thought at that point that we were going to be in a shootout. Then it seemed like we dropped the ball and they kept rolling.
“In the past we have been beat physically but we have some things we need to work on mentally.”
Liberty was able to find the end zone first in the contest scoring on a six-play opening drive that was capped off by a 18-yard touchdown pass by Wright. The Raiders converted a two-point conversion to go up 8-0.
PikeView answered right back, capping off a nine-play drive with a four-yard touchdown run by Hoston. The extra point was good and the Panthers pulled to within one at 8-7.
But from that point on it was all Liberty as the Raiders rallied for 34 consecutive points. Liberty intercepted PikeView twice.
PikeView (1-2) will look to bounce back next week as they travel to James Monroe to take on the Mavericks. Liberty (2-1) will hit the road again to travel to take on Mount View.
