HINTON — Class AA No. 12 Summers County defeated No. 13 Independence 13-9 Friday in a defensive battle.
Independence marched down the field on its first possession to take a quick 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Alex Daniels.
The Patriots dominated the first half, but three turnovers kept them from building on their lead.
Summers County took the final possession of the first half and marched 84 yards in 1:40, tying the game on Matt Ryan's 1-yard run with just 1.3 seconds remaining until halftime.
After a scoreless third period, Ryan raced 55 yards for the go-ahead score with 4:03 remaining in the game.
The Patriots threatened down the stretch, but a Ryan interception stopped their final drive and sealed the win for the Bobcats.
Ryan finished with 126 yards on the night for the Bobcats. Daniels led Independence with 96 yards and Connor Gibson added 84.
Summers County (6-1) hosts Meadow Bridge next Friday, while Independence (5-2) has another tough road test at county rival Liberty.
