WELCH — The junior one-two combination of Justin Cogar and Mike Mullens scored three times apiece Friday on a beautiful evening for football to lead Westside to a 46-6 win over the Mount View Golden Knights on Senior Night at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
Mullens ran the pigskin 18 times for 204 yards and three scores, while Cogar rushed for a pair of TDs and scored a third time following a pass interception he returned 40 yards.
Remarked first year Renegade head coach Larry Cook, “It was a much-needed win. We had an open week last week after getting beat up (physically) by Bluefield. This week, we’ve been up and down in practice, but finished practice with some momentum. I just wanted to make sure we finished (the game) with momentum.”
Westside moves to 4-5 with the win, heading into next Friday’s regular season finale at Clear Fork against River View.
Cogar, who missed the first seven games of the season after breaking his ankle in a preseason contest, put the Renegades on top for keeps at the 6:36 mark of the opening chapter on a two yard run.
That score added an exclamation mark on fellow junior Bryce Robin-son’s first (of two) interceptions of the evening.
Mullens got into the scoring act with 3:29 showing in the first on a 21 yard burst around right end, capping a 6 play, 41 yard drive.
Robinson’s ensuing kickoff following Cogar’s initial TD set the stage for that bell ringer. His high kick reached a Knight returner at the same time as a solid tackle that separated player and football, with the pigskin being recovered by the visitors.
Mullens’ 31 yard jaunt up the middle capped a two play, 31 yard march that was brought about by a D. J. Lester fumble recovery. That run extended the Renegade lead to 18-0 with 7:42 remaining in the first half.
Cogar scored on a 4 yard keeper on an option with 1:47 showing before the break and Robinson put the capper on the first half scoring 54 ticks later after intercepting his second pass of the night and returning for a pick-six from 44 yards out to pen a 30-0 intermission advantage.
The Renegade defense, that recovered three View first half fumbles, in addition to intercepting a pair of passes, held the Golden Knights to a minus-three yards on the ground in the initial 24 minutes.
Cogar did a repeat of Robinson’s pick-six with one of his own from 40 yards out 3:16 into the third, with Mullens tacking on the two point conversion on a run.
Mount View scored at the 10:07 mark of the final frame on a 53 yard pass from LaQuell Martin to a wide open Marlin Marrs.
Mullens scored on a 21 yard scamper with 4:20 showing in the contest and Cogar passed to sophomore Larry Cook for the extra points and the final 46-6 win.
Analyzed Golden Knight head coach Todd McCoy, “We had several key injuries in the game. Chris (Muncy, the starting quarterback) was injured twice. We had to move some people around and even ran some from the single wing.”
Cogar ran the football 13 times for 52 yards, while completing 5-of-10 aerial attempts for 104 yards.
Martin led the Knight ground attack with 38 yards in 17 rushes.
The Golden Knights, now 1-8, will visit Mingo Central Friday night.
