GRUNDY, Va. — In the second quarter Grundy looked like a team primed to pull off an upset.
In the second half Haysi played like a team determined to remain undefeated.
Jeffrey Bowen scored five touchdowns, three in the third quarter as the Tigers ran past the Golden Wave, 60-26, in Black Diamond District play Friday night at Nelson Memorial Field.
Charles McCoy threw long TD passes to Austin Hurley and Trey Smith as Grundy (2-3) scored 20 points in the second period to pull within 29-26 at halftime.
Bowen picked up his third and fourth touchdown runs in the third period and added a 49-yard kick return after a Haysi safety as the Tigers (4-0) seized the momentum in a big way after the intermission.
“(Grundy) came out ready to play,” said Bowen, who finished with over 300 all-purpose yards, including 267 yards rushing on 24 carries. “The first half didn’t end so well so we came out pumped in the second half.
“At halftime we just tried to get everybody’s head straight and we just came out and played hard-nosed ball.”
While Haysi amassed over 300 yards of total offense in the second half and finished with 569 for the game, including 445 on the ground, Grundy didn’t pick up a first down in the second half til midway through the fourth quarter.
“Offensively the second quarter was the best we’ve played all year,” Grundy coach Jeremy Ward said. “Defensively we were right in there till halftime.
“When they came out and scored on their opening drive in the second half we kind of just got out of rythhm defensively and it’s the same thing for us every week. We’ve just got to learn how to tackle better.”
Haysi held Grundy to 37 total yards in the second half, and some of that came on the game’s final possession.
“We made a couple of adjustments on defense in the second half and it worked,” Haysi coach James Colley said. “They did a good job with it. Give Grundy credit. They came to play in the first half.”
