GARDNER — Speed can be dangerous. When you add it with missed tackles, it can be deadly.
Summers County used that formula to perfection against PikeView as they Bobcats ran away from the Panthers 44-20 Friday night at PikeView High School.
“It always good to start off with win,” Summers County head coach Josh Houchins said. “I thought our line took control of the game. I'm really proud of those guys in how they came together as a unit.
“They made the holes and our backs were able to get through them. It's always good to get the first one under the belt.”
On numerous occasions, PikeView had Summers County rushers contained to short or minimal gains, but the Panthers couldn't finish the tackles. The Bobcats were able to break free for 301 yards rushing.
“It's going back to the basics,” said PikeView head coach Bobby Wyatt. “We talked about it. It's lunging instead of breaking down and committing to the tackle. They're very good runners and if you lunge at them, they're going to side step you. We worked on it and we'll continue to work on it.”
Dustin Smith led Summers County with 118 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns. Isaiah Brown added a touchdown and 65 yards. T.J. Smith finished with 58 yards and two scores.
“We saw the way they were defending and we know a lot of teams will defend us that way,” Houchins said. “They were really, really trying to avoid us getting outside of them. It kind of opened up some natural lanes inside that we were able to exploit.”
After a three-and-out by PikeView to start the game, the Bobcats marched 72 yards on 11 plays to open the score. Brown broke several tackles for a 10-yard score. T.J. Smith converted the two-point conversion.
It took the Panthers until their third series before they had a first down. Yet following their first down, PikeView couldn't handle the exchange and Allen Brown pounced on the fumble. Three plays later, T.J. Smith scored a 15-yard touchdown.
Summers County limited the Panthers to 44 yards rushing in the first. PikeView did have some success through the air. Jordan Hardin connected with Logan McKinney for a 68-yard touchdown.
“He's going to be a good one,” Wyatt said of McKinney who is just a sophomore. “He played very well for us on defense too. Anytime you see good things happen with your young kids, it gives you excitement and encouragement for things in the future.”
Summers County would break the game open thanks to a poor kickoff and a 15-yard personal foul penalty by the Panthers.
The Bobcats had just 30 yards to go and in two plays Dustin Smith had a 29-yard score. Before the half was over, Summers County stuck again with a Erik Lindsey six-yard touchdown reception to make it 30-6.
“Big plays. You could see the experience factor,” Wyatt said. “I thought at 16-6, we really didn't realize where we were at in the game. We didn't execute the kickoff well and couple mistakes turned a 16-6 halftime into 30-6.
“When you're young, it's hard to overcome those. They're getting there. I think we're learning.”
Dustin Smith added a second rushing touchdown in the third quarter. T.J Smith joined him as Summers County built up a 44-6 lead.
PikeView didn't quit though as Trevor Shannon broke free for a 24-yard rushing touchdown to start the fourth quarter. Freshmen Daniel Brown scored the game's final touchdown as he powered in for a four-yard score.
“As a coach, you want to see some kind of confidence,” Wyatt said. “Anytime you can score and do something right, it builds the confidence. It was real nice to see our freshmen get in there at the end.
“They played good defense. The first drive we scored on with the freshmen we ran two plays. It shows basic football can work. Once those kids realize that, other things will fall into place.”
Tanner Farley led PikeView with 85 yards rushing. Shannon finished with 42 yards. Adam Holdren and Daniel Brown had success late. Holdren had 36 yards while Brown rumbled for 39 yards.
McKinney had two catches for 80 yards and score. Hardin was 3-for-6 with a touchdown and interception. He finished with 85 yards passing.
T.J Smith completed just one pass for Summers County. It was a six-yard strike to Lindsey for the score. Two other passes were dropped and once was off target
The Panthers (0-1) host River View Friday night while Summers County (1-0) welcomes James Monroe.
