WELCH — Mount View senior Maurice Brown returned the opening kickoff of the second half 84 yards for an electrifying touchdown to pull the Knights to within 8, at 20-12, before the visiting Man Hillbillies tallied 21 straight points to capture a 41-12 win at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
Golden Knight head coach Leon Gravely said of the return, “We had a little bit of momentum left (to start the second half).”
The Hillbillies, now 1-1 on the season, scored on their initial series of the game, going 75 yards in 10 plays.
Senior quarterback Shane Browning took the shotgun snap and rolled left for a 2 yard score at the 7:11 mark of the opening frame.
Josh Booth kicked the PAT for an early 7-0 Man advantage.
Pinned back at their 1, following a Hillbilly punt, the Knights fumbled the pigskin at that point and senior Nicholas Carter recovered in the end zone for a 14-0 lead following Booth’s conversion kick at the 10:11 point of the second.
With 4:30 showing before the break, Browning rolled right, then scrambled left before unloading a pass to a wide-open Thomas Belcher, who hauled in the ball and raced into the end zone to complete a 41-yard scoring pass and run.
The Golden Knights, who fell to 0-2 with the loss, came right back, with junior quarterback Teddy Hazzard threading the needle on a 40-yard scoring rope to senior Trey Huckleberry down the left side line with 1:32 showing before intermission.
Brown fielded the opening kick of the second half of his own 16, cut right before turning back toward the visitors’ side line and completing an 84-yard touchdown dash to cut the deficit to the aforementioned 20-12 .
The Hillbillies scored on their next three possessions to put the game out of reach following Brown’s thrilling return.
Senior Kaleb Spurlock scored on a 13-yard run with 8:48 left in the third, followed by a Christopher Johnson conversion run.
Johnson hit paydirt with 1:55 remaining on a 39-yard run, breaking no less than five tackles on the carry.
With three ticks left in the third, freshman Braden Griffen’s four yard touchdown gallop following a Cody Crumb pass interception extended the lead to 40-12 before Booth tacked on the PAT kick.
“We’re proud of what we did because we made some big improvements from last week,” said veteran Mann head coach Harvey Arms, “Last week we made some really simple, stupid mistakes. We played pretty well most of tonight.”
Coach Gravely looked at his lack of depth and having to use a minimal number of players as one reason for his club’s second-half fade.
“We know we’re playing with a lack of depth. Our guys played hard,” Gravely said. “We made some mistakes early...I just think we got worn down.”
The Golden Knights are home next Friday to face Tug Valley, while Man travels to Westside.
