HUNTINGTON — Spring Valley High School’s football team knows what Brown can do for you. Deliver.
Quarterback Tyler Brown broke school career records for scoring and passing yards Friday night in leading Spring Valley (4-1) to a 47-21 victory over Princeton.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior passed for 112 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 63 yards and three TDs against the Tigers (1-4).
The Princeton defense gave up 377 yards, including 265 on the ground.
Brown’s 10-yard touchdown run with 6 seconds left in the third quarter gave the Timberwolves a 41-21 lead and stole momentum from the Tigers, who had climbed back in the game after trailing 34-6.
Princeton standout quarterback Jay Palmer’s 5-yard scoring scamper at 9:35 of the third quarter brought his team within 34-21.
Spring Valley scored on its first possession as Brown hit Austin Stambaugh with a 42-yard touchdown pass at 4:22 of the first quarter, but Princeton needed just 80 seconds to tie it as Palmer showed two elusive moves during a 38-yard touchdown run that made it 6-6.
The Tigers gave up 28 points in the second quarter. The Timberwolves took advantage of consecutive 15-yard penalties to set up Brown’s 20-yard TD run with 7:05 left before halftime.
Princeton fumbled away the ensuing kickoff and Skyler Ratcliff’s 2-yard scoring plunge gave Spring Valley a 26-6 lead with 5:30 left in the second quarter.
Chandler Stacy then blocked a Princeton punt and one play later Brown scramble 10 yards for a touchdown that put the Timberwolves ahead 34-6.
The Tigers refused to quit, as Palmer threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Cole Cochran as time expired in the first half. Princeton then recovered a fumble to begin the third quarter and Palmer scored from 5 yards to make it 34-21 with 9:35 left in the game.
That’s when Spring Valley’s defense stiffened and set up Brown’s third quarter touchdown. Frye added a 5-yard scoring run with 3:09 left to set the score.
“Our defense played well,” Spring Valley coach Brad Dingess said. “It’s tough to play assignment football against the triple-option, especially when you don’t see it often. Palmer is tough. He’s one of the better players in the state. I’d put him up against anybody.”
Palmer ran for 105 yards on 24 attempts, but lost 18 yards in sacks. Ratcliff led the Timberwolves with 79 yards on 12 carries.
