BIRCHLEAF, Va. — Haysi hopes its final homecoming is the beginning of one last winning streak.
The Tigers blanked Grundy, 50-0, in a Black Diamond District contest Friday night at Sandlick Elementary School.
Jalen Sykes threw three touchdown passes and ran for one score and both Tristan Yates and Ryan Turner added long TD runs for Haysi (3-1).
It was the last-ever homecoming game for Haysi, which will consolidate with Clintwood to form Ridgeview High School in the fall of 2015. It also came on the heels of the Tigers’ first regular season loss in two years and just its second loss in its last 17 games overall.
A senior, Yates gained 94 of Haysi’s 250 rushing yards on just six carries and was among the Tigers tackle leaders with eight in his last homecoming game.
“Coming off a loss I’m just glad we got a win,” he said. “This last week of practice was very intense. We practiced like it was a Honaker or Clintwood week. I guess we should do that every week.”
Yates opened the scoring with a 26-yard run and Turner sprinted in from 50 yards out in a 15-point first quarter. Haysi used offensive lineman Bryan Duncan as a blocking back and it paid off.
“It’s something we put in, we thought we’d have some success with it,” Sykes said. “Bryan’s big, he’s strong, he’s fast for his size.
“The 49ers do it with Daniel Kilgore from Kingsport and we thought, ‘we can try that’ and he opened up some huge holes. He was like a truck lead blocking for you, so it worked well.”
In the second quarter Sykes threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Artrip and threw a perfect strike to Hunter Sutherland on a 57-yard score. The senior QB ran 21 yards for another touchdown and added a 26-yard TD pass to Guage Hill in the third period.
Blake Fuller capped the scoring with a 16-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Ethan Duty ran 22 times for 50 yards and freshman Jacob McNutt added 49 yards on eight carries for Grundy (0-5).
The Golden Wave turned the ball over four times. Fuller had nine tackles and Turner had eight and finished with 78 rushing yards for the Tigers.
