SHADY SPRING — The competition hasn’t been as strong for Shady Spring the last two weeks, but getting a couple of wins is just what the Tigers needed.
A week before getting back to the Class AAA portion of its schedule, the Tigers pounced on struggling PikeView for 27 first-quarter points. To their credit, the Panthers never quit, but Shady won 56-30 Friday night at H.B. Thomas Field in Shady Spring.
“We just hit our big plays,” Tigers coach Vince Culicerto said. “We’ve been doing that the last two games. We’ve been putting up some points and some yards, and executing and catching the ball. We’re working pretty good in our offense right now.”
The Tigers (2-2) wasted no time in establishing control, and were efficient in doing so. They needed only seven plays and a total possession time of 2:29 to take a 27-0 lead.
All-state quarterback Adam Weeks threw three of his four touchdown passes in the first quarter. Nathan Gillian took a screen pass 71 yards for a score, Jordan Palchesko 65 yards and Houstin Syvertson 34.
Weeks played the whole third quarter but threw one incomplete pass.
He finished 7 of 11 for a season-high 268 yards. His fourth touchdown went 40 yards to Zack Wayne late in the second quarter.
“It’s important just to get every win you can get,” Palchesko said. “You have to have a short memory and work up to next week.”
Palchesko had a big all-around game. He ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns, caught a two-point conversion pass and threw for another on a botched PAT kick, and had an interception that set up Syvertson’s TD catch.
“When I’m called upon, I do what (Culicerto) wants me to do,” Palchesko said. “I get the ball and go hard every play. Whatever happens, happens.”
Syvertson scored on a 94-yard run with four minutes to play in the third to put the Tigers ahead 56-14.
Both teams pulled their starters in the fourth quarter.
“PikeView’s going through some changes there, but those boys, give them a lot of credit. They scrapped,” Culicerto said. “They kept after us all night.”
Despite falling behind so quickly, PikeView (0-5) put up a fight. The Panthers finally scored on a 55-yard scoring pass from Jordan Hardin to Logan McKinney barely a minute into the second quarter.
Junior tailback Hunter Moses continued his stellar season for PikeView. The converted fullback ran for a game-high 194 yards on 30 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown in the second.
Since changing positions in Week 2, Moses’ lowest output was 93 yards against James Monroe.
“I knew coming in what the cards were,” said first-year PikeView coach Bobby Wyatt said. “They lost all the athletes that they even had last year as far as skill people. We’ve had to put people out of position. We have just asked that they play hard and keep working.
“We are probably a better 0-5 team than what we look.”
The Panthers will visit Class A No. 6 Greenbrier West next Friday.
Syvertson went over 100 yards rushing and receiving. He had 112 on the ground and 102 on four receptions.
Shady (2-2) will play at Class AAA No. 12 Oak Hill to take on Jalen Jones and the Red Devils next Friday.
“It’s going to be a big challenge,” Palchesko said. “We need to get better against the sweep. I think if we get that down, we’ll be OK.”
