BIRCHLEAF, Va. — Haysi’s passing game put some quick points on the board.
Its running game put Grundy away.
The Tigers pulled away in the second half to a 46-23 win over the Golden Wave in Black Diamond District play Friday night at Sandlick Elementary School.
Zach Owens threw two long touchdown passes, a 69-yarder to Jeffrey Bowen and 79-yard bomb to Heath Mullins as Haysi built a 24-8 lead.
The Tigers (2-2, 1-0) had 202 yards passing overall in the first half and a 24-16 halftime advantage when they changed their offensive game plan and 0 the second half on the ground.
Bowen and fullback Tyler Blankenship led a rushing attack that controlled the ball, the clock and the scoreboard to add three scores and give Haysi a 46-16 advantage with 3:03 remaining in the contest.
“At halftime we decided to run the ball,” Haysi coach James Colley said. “We had the lead so we decided to go with the run and we were pretty successful running it.”
Bowen had a 10-yard TD run on Haysi’s first series of the second half and added a 25-yard scoring run with 8:06 remaining. The junior finished with 106 yards rushing on 15 carries. Blankenship, who set up his one-yard touchdown run in the first half with a 40-yard gain, added 77 yards on 12 attempts.
Dylan Billiter returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter for Grundy (2-2, 2-1). Kade Hackney added a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter.
Trey Smith intercepted two passes and got over half of Grundy’s total offense on a 78-yard touchdown run with 2:09 left.
Haysi held the Golden Wave to 149 yards of total offense. The Tigers first team defense allowed just one score and a mere 12 yards in the air.
“Our defense did a super job all night,” Colley added. “We made some adjustments and had a little different look tonight. We had a big goal-line stand and I thought we put pressure on Grundy the whole game.”
Grundy was without three key starters much of the game. Hackney, Nick Travis and Tyler Clabough were sidelined with various injuries.
Golden Wave coach Jeremy Ward had to leave immediately after the game because of a family emergency and was unavailable for comment. Haysi wore the initials of James Colley’s father, who passed away earlier in the week, on their helmets.
