GARDNER — The River View Raiders scored on six of seven first half possessions to defeat the PikeView Panthers, Friday night on the campus of PikeView High School, 52-20.
“We’re thankful to get away from here with a win,” said River View head coach Mitch Estep. “PikeView played hard, they’re young. We got to play a lot of young players and that’s always good because you get the younger kids a chance to play in actual games. It was a good game for both teams.”
PikeView took the opening kickoff and punted after three plays. River View took over at its own 35. Joseph McClanahan rushed 21 yards, Jordan Wilson then carried for 13 to the PikeView 31, then quarterback Austin Walker called his own number and scampered 31 yards for the score. Wilson ran for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0.
Another Panthers’ three and out gave the Raiders the ball on their own 25. Wilson carried for 35 yards, then Walker connected with Brandon Thompson on a 40 yard pass play for the score. McClanahan ran the conversion and it was 16-0.
The River View defense was stifling, stopping PikeView on its first four possessions of the game. Meanwhile the Raiders continued to score.
Walker completed a 54 yard pass for a score to Wilson with 2:16 left in the opening quarter to make it 22-0. River View then made it 29-0 when McClanahan ran 26 yards for paydirt and Jeremy Crigger booted the PAT.
PikeView got on the board in the second period when Justin Hardin and Logan McKinney hooked up on a 54 yard pitch and catch for a TD. The conversion run failed.
River View responded with a two-play drive on which Wilson ran the final 36 yards for the score to make it 35-6 midway through the second quarter.
PikeView responded in kind with its own six play drive, capped by Hunter Moses running 24 yards for the touchdown. Joseph Jennings ran for the conversion to make it 35-14.
River View, on its seventh possession of the opening half had a two play, 52 second drive that culminated with Jamie Mills running 54 yards for the touchdown. Crigger’s kick made it 42-14.
PikeView drove to the River View four yard line, but time expired to end the half.
Panthers’ coach Bobby Wyatt said his team needs to focus on the non-physical part of the game.
“We’ve got to work on mental toughness,” Wyatt said. “I don’t know if we understand the idea of getting ready for a football game. I think the problem here is these boys have just been beat up on so much, we sit back and see how bad it’s going to be before we play.
“We’ve got to come out mentally tougher at the beginning of the game. We’ll work on that and we’ll get better.”
In the second half both teams agreed to play with a continuously running clock. There was no scoring in the third period. River View scored its final touchdown of the night with 7:22 to go in the game on a 50 yard run by Ryan Blankenship. Matthew Thornsbury connected with Dustin Jackson for the two-point conversion.
PikeView scored the last points of the night when freshman Adam Holdren ran 50 yards to the end zone with 4:37 left to play. The conversion attempt failed.
PikeView’s Moses led all rushers with 116 yards on 26 carries, all coming in the first half. Moses was moved from fullback last week, to halfback for the game against River View.
River View’s ground attack was led by Wilson who tallied 99 yards on seven carries, all in the first half. Blankenship tallied 88 yards on the ground, all in the second half. Walker was 2-for-2 passing for 94 yards and a TD.
Estep said that he saw his team grow in confidence and performance over last week’s outing against Mount View.
“Our biggest improvement was our offensive line,” Estep said. “We didn’t play very well last week. I thought we played a little better (tonight) and that made it easier for us to score.”
Wyatt said, “I played two seniors and we played five freshmen tonight. It’s going to take a process to get there and I’m willing to take that process. I knew that when I came in here, and I am not going to get frustrated.”
River View, now 2-0, plays next week at Mingo Central. PikeView, 0-2, will host Liberty-Raleigh.
