CLEAR FORK — “(River View Head) Coach (Gehrig) Justice does a good job. We knew they (Raiders) would give it their best shot in the first quarter and we had to just hang in there,” analyzed first year Westside Renegade head coach Larry Cook last night following his club’s 52-24 win on Senior Night.
The Raiders proved Cook correct, taking an early 6-0 lead and then going on top 12-6 before three second quarter turnovers on lost River View fumbles helped the Renegades not only hang in there, but forge a 28-12 advantage at intermission.
Junior Westside quarterback Justin Cogar, who missed the first five games of the regular season after breaking an ankle in a preseason scrimmage, and played sparingly in the sixth, left no doubt he is returning to his old form.
On the night, Cogar completed 11-of-22 pass tries for 230 yards and three scores, all to senior end Corey Bowles.
To compliment that aerial show, Cogar ran the pigskin 17 times for 137 yards and a pair of scores, while picking off a Raider pass on defense, just for good measure.
Fellow junior Mike Mullens, who was held in check by the View in the first half, finished his night’s work with 126 yards on 21 attempts and a pair of scores. Bowles caught five of Cogar’s passes, including the aforementioned three for TDs, for 135 yards.
Assessed Coach Justice, “I thought we played well in the first half, other than those fumbles…Although we were behind 28-12 at halftime, I thought we outplayed them. Those three fumbles just killed us.”
Senior Joseph McClanahan snared a 20 yard touchdown pass from freshman Raider QB Michael Price to stake the visitors to a 6-0 advantage with 8:19 showing in the opening frame.
Mullens knotted the count at 6 at the 3:49 mark before senior River View fullback Greg Marshall bulled in from two yards out on sheer second effort with 9:23 on the clock in the initial half to push the Raiders up 12-6.
The first Cogar-to-Bowles scoring strike, covering 35 yards, came 56 ticks later, and with a repeat of the passing six for the conversion, the Renegades, who conclude the campaign 5-5, were off and running, or rather throwing.
Two additional aerials from Cogar-to-Bowles, from 41 and 35 yards, extended the lead to 28-12 at the break.
Cogar scored back-to-back times in the third to put the advantage to 44-12 after three quarters.
Price tossed his second TD pass of the contest with 7:18 remaining in the game. That strike covered 8 yards to sophomore Tyree Baker.
Mullens finally broke a long-gainer on Westside’s ensuing series, galloping 68 yards only half-a-minute after Baker’s grab.
Junior Jordan Wilson, who ran the football 23 times for 174 yards to pace River View, countered with a 70 yard burst that closed out the scoring.
River View finished 4-6.
