BRADSHAW — Momentum swung in the PikeView Panthers’ direction with no time left on the first half clock on Friday night at the Ravine.
River View put together a strong initial half and held a 20-13 advantage on Senior Night before PikeView senior Tobias Testerman booted a 35-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter to cut the Panther deficit to 20-16.
PikeView head coach Bobby Wyatt spoke of that kick following the game, “I think what the field goal did for us is showed us we could score…Actually I think our kids came in at halftime and felt like we’d won the first half, even though we were behind.”
The Panthers left no doubt who the winners were in the second two dozen minutes, as they outscored River View 16-0 for a 32-20 win to improve their slate to 3-5.
Continued Coach Wyatt, “Tonight I thought we played well all night. We got off to a kind of slow start…They (Panthers) have played with a lot of resiliency this year.”
Senior bull dozer Hunter Moses finished his evening’s work with 28 carries for 223 yards and three touchdowns, including 119 of those yards on the ground in the deciding second half for PikeView.
Senior quarterback Chris McBride completed six passes for 134 yards and one score.
River View scored first, with 38 ticks left in the initial frame on a 62 yard pass from Ryan Blankenship to Joseph McClanahan.
McClanahan adjusted nicely to the underthrown pass before using his 6-0 height to outjump two Panther defenders before racing the final 25 yards.
Hunter Crigger’s conversion boot put the Raiders up 7-0.
PikeView came charging right back to tie the count at 7 only 1:43 into the second chapter.
Moses hit paydirt on a four yard run up the middle to cap a six play, 63 yard drive that spanned the opening two periods.
Testerman kicked the PAT for the deadlock.
A Moses 29 yard gallop at the 4:16 mark of the first half pushed PikeView on top 13-7 after the Panther defense had stopped the Raiders on downs at the visitors’ 39.
River View junior Jordan Wilson, who had a very respectable night himself, rolling up 184 yards on 27 attempts, embarked on a tackle-breaking run around left end that resulted in a 29 yard TD with 2:38 left before the break, knotting the score at 13.
Crigger’s ensuing kickoff landed the Panthers in a hole that translated into great River View field position after a three-and-out.
On first-and-ten at the PikeView 14, Blankenship hit a streaking Tyree Baker down the left sideline for the go-ahead score on the fourth snap of the series, and with Crigger’s extra point kick, the Raiders led once again, this time 20-13 with 1:09 showing.
McBride marched his team skillfully downfield in seven plays before Testerman’s field goal ended the half.
Moses gave PikeView the lead for keeps with 10:01 on the third period clock on a brusing 59 yard run that featured him bouncing off would-be tacklers to continue goalward.
Less than three minutes later, McBride hooked up with junior Takota Bailey on a 65 yard pass and run to extend the advantage to 30-20, as Testerman again added the PAT kick.
A final score came on a safety with 10:53 left in the contest when a River View snap eluded Blankenship, who chased the football as if it was a greased pig 21 yards before being tackled in his own endzone.
River View was driving late in the game and had a first-and-goal at the Panther three, but fumbled the ball away, for the second time inside PikeView’s five. On their initial series of the game, the Raiders fumbled the ball at the Panther one, losing possession.
Related Raider head coach Gehrig Justice of his assessment of his teams woes, “Just making mistakes at the wrong time. The first drive of the game, we don’t pick up the blitz and we fumble. The last play of the game (offensively), the ball hits the kid in the chest and he fumbles it.”
PikeView will visit Meadow Bridge Friday night, while the 3-4 Raiders will travel to Nicholas County, also on Friday.
