Warriors rally to beat Mavs

LINDSIDE — The potent duo of Nik Walker and Jonathon Culicerto helped Wyoming East rally from a first half deficit for a 31-21 win over the James Monroe on Friday night at the at the H.E. Comer Jr. Sports Complex.
James Monroe (2-2) did all its scoring in the first half, taking a 21-17 lead into the break. The Warriors scored the final 14 points of the game to pull away and win their second straight game after starting the season losing three games in a row.
Walker had 219 yards on 34 carries for Wyoming East, while Culicerto had 135, including second half touchdowns of 40 and 1 yard in the second half.
James Monroe was first to find the end zone on the game’s opening series when quarterback Reed McNeer hooked up with Evan Beasley for a 36-yard touchdown pass putting the Mavericks up 7-0.
Wyoming East answered on its first possession, with the Warriors cutting the lead to 7-3 on a 30-yard field goal by Tristan Jones.
After the clubs traded punts, McNeer had a pass picked off by Wyoming East, with the Warriors taking over possession as the James Monroe 31,
Not only did the Warriors get an extra 15 yards on a facemask penalty, butt they were able to convert a 4th and inches to get the ball at the Mavericks’ 5. Ten seconds later, Wyoming East quarterback Jacob Dulcie ran the ball in from five yards for the 10-7 lead.
Wyoming East had to punt on its next possession, but a roughing the kicker call gave the Warriors back, and they took advantage, led by Walker, who scored 2 yards out
James Monroe would scored on its next possessions prior to halftime. First, McNeer connected with Tyler Sams on an 8-yard scoring pass, and Grant Mohler followed by picking off a Wyoming East pass and dashing 88 yards to the end zone, giving the Mavericks the 21-17 lead at the break.
Punts and turnovers became common in the second half, with the Warriors finally getting on the board with 3:38 left in the third period on the 40-yard run to paydirt by Culicerto.
Wyoming East added a final score in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Culicerto with 8:45 left in the game.
McNeer threw for 107 yards, and led the Mavericks on the ground with 30.
James Monroe could never get its offense on track after the break, dropping to 2-2 on the season.
The Mavericks will host Nicholas County next Friday.
