CHARLESTON — Princeton extended top-ranked George Wahsington to the limit before falling to the Patriots 20-8 at Steve Edwards Field Friday night.
The Tigers struck first when defensive back Lamont Lee picked off a Trevor Bell pass on George Washington’s first possession, putting Princeton in business at the Patriots 45-yard line.
A 41-yard Storm McPherson to Corey Quick pass got the Tigers close and Tahj Sho-Johnson scored the game’s first touchdown from one yard out with 8:38 left in the first quarter. The PAT was no good.
After Princeton marched deep into Patriot territory in the second qurter, a 32-yard Brandon Barrett field goal attempt just missed squeezing inside the right upright.
After the touchback, George Washington mounted an 11-play, 80-yard drive.
All-state tailback Ryan Switzer swept to the left end from four yards out to cap off the drive and Jack Bunn nailed the extra point to give the Patriots a led 7-6 .
Late in the half, Princeton moved into the George Washington red zone but Switzer picked off a Princeton aerial attempt and returned it 90 yards for a score with 0:27 remaining until intermission.
That enabled the Patriots to take a 14-6 lead to the locker room.
A Princeton third quarter drive was stalled inside the George Washington 10, but the Tigers’ defense stonewalled Switzer in the endzone for a safety, cutting their deficit to six points, 14-8.
In the fourth quarter, the Patriots mounted a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended up with a 10-yard scoring pass, Bell to Malik Hampton, midway through the period.
That provided the final scoring in GW’s 20-8 win.
Johnson led Princeton with 100 yards on 24 carries.
Switzer, who led the MSAC in rushing, was held to 61 yards on 20 carries by the Tigers’ defense.
The Patriots are now 5-0 while the Tigers dropped 2-3. Princeton travels to Mitchell Stadiumto face Graham on Friday.
