LICK CREEK, Ky. -- Last season was something of a nightmare for Grundy football. So far this season the Golden Wave is living the dream.
Grundy remains unbeaten after hanging on for a wild, 46-44 win over East Ridge in interstate action Friday night.
Jacob McNutt scored five touchdowns and was part of a running tandem that netted a total of 412 rushing yards. Both he and Daleton Anglin ran for over 200 yards.
In an offensive struggle in a game that lasted three hours, one big defensive play saved the Wave at the end.
Brody Johnson’s third TD run of the game brought the Warriors (1-3) back from a 39-22 fourth-quarter deficit to within 46-44 with 1:30 remaining.
On the two-point conversion attempt Grundy defensive end Donovan Owens turned Johnson inside and into the arms of tackle Ethan Dillow, who stopped Johnson just short of the goal line.
The victory ends a marathon stretch of three games in a week for the Golden Wave.
It was the second win in four days after the completion of a September 4 game with River View that was suspended by lightning in the first quarter.
“It was a good football game,” Grundy coach Jeremy Ward said. “Our defense struggled, but that was our third game in a week facing good running teams. The main thing is we hung on and found victory.”
McNutt ran the ball 24 times for 210 yards. Anglin toted it 20 times for 229 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
It’s believed to be the first time Grundy has ever had two running backs gain over 200 yards in the same game.
“We set a goal at the beginning of the season to improve our rushing game,” said Ward. “And our offensive line has opened up some great holes and our backs have made some great reads.
“For them to have such great nights, both having 200 yard games is a big deal.”
The game took so long in part because the officials never enforced a 25-second play clock and halftime lasted over half an hour.
