MONTCALM — The skies were clear and the air was crisp Friday night at Prudich Stadium in Montcalm, but there was definitely thunder and lightning as the Narrows Green Wave rushed for 470 yards and defeated the Montcalm Generals 38-14.
Bruising fullback Terrence Martin was the thunder as he powered his way for 187 yards and two touchdowns, while speedy tailback Rodney Perdue was the lightning, dashing for 200 yards and three scores.
“It’s a good attack these kids have,” said Narrows head coach Kelly Lowe. “Terrence is a good power runner, Ronnie can get out there quick and it’s a good one-two punch from those guys tonight.”
Narrows scored on the game’s first possession, taking the opening kick and going 59 yards in five plays, Perdue capping the drive with a 24 yard run for the score. Joe Hall passed to Cody Collins for the two-point conversion.
Later in the first quarter Narrows extended its lead when Martin ran 24 yards for the score. Again Hall’s conversion pass was good, this time to Gavin Givens to make it 16-0.
Montcalm got on the board late in the opening period as they marched 55 yards in four plays. Jason Grose carried 11 yards into Narrows territory and a facemask penalty gave the Generals additional yards. A 15-yard pass from Dakota Lanter to Ryan Absher moved the ball to the 31 and Lanter carried for 16 on a keeper, down to the Green Wave nine. Grose capped the drive with a nine yard touchdown run. The conversion run failed.
The Narrows ground game went into high gear and in the second quarter the Green Wave added two more scores, one on a 10-yard run by Perdue, the other on a two yard dive by Martin. Hall passed again to Collins for one conversion and Martin kicked the second to give Narrows a 31-6 lead that it carried into the half.
After a tough first half, Montcalm head coach Jimmy Redmond said he told his team to stay focused.
“I told them to keep their heads up and to keep playing,” Redmond said after the game. “I think we lost a little bit of focus. We were playing with a lot of emotion and we kind of lost our heads with penalties, a couple of unsportsmanlike calls. I told them we can’t do that, we can’t play with emotions on our sleeve.”
Montcalm came out and played better second half football, eliminating the penalties and on their second drive of the half drove deep inside Narrows territory, but turned the ball over on downs.
On the first play after getting the ball on downs from the Generals, Perdue took the handoff, cut outside around right end and outran the Montcalm defense for a 63-yard touchdown run. Martin’s kick was good and it was 38-6.
Montcalm closed out the scoring in the fourth period when Groce ran four yards for the score. Lanter scored the conversion on a keeper around left end. In the drive Lanter had key scrambles for seven and 12 yards and Absher had a 25-yard run.
Montcalm fell to 1-2 on the season, losing for the second consecutive week. Narrows improved to 2-1, winning for the second consecutive week.
“They have size and they are well-coached. Their blocking was excellent,” Redmond said. “We just couldn’t get off our blocks offensively or on defense. We were out-sized in the first half. We played a better second half. I was pretty displeased with the first half, we didn’t play well.”
Montcalm hosts Craig County next Friday.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve got two wins in a row. For the past couple of years we’ve played in streaks, but they’ve been the wrong way,” Lowe said. “We’ve been talking a lot about that this year, making streaks of a different kind. Now we’ve got a two-game winning streak. The kids have done a great job, the coaches have coached great and the community has supported us like you wouldn’t believe.”
Narrows puts its winning streak on the line next week at rival Giles.
In the passing department Hall completed one of eight for eight yards.
Groce led Montcalm in rushing with 111 yards and Lanter completed four-of-eight passes for 41 yards with an interception.
