COAL CITY — One week after rallying to a season-opening win, the PikeView Panthers were shut down by Independence, gaining just 63 yards in a 26-0 loss to the Patriots on Friday night.
Woodrow Wilson transfer Austin Weiss had 12 tackles, including a sack, while Alex Daniels added six tackles and a sack.
Ryan Brandsetter was effective on offense, completing 5-of-8 passes for 51 yards, while also running for 84 yards and a score. Dustin Justice added 38 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while Brandon Treadway had 30 yards, two scores and an interception on defense.
"We talked before the game about not getting off to a bad start like we did against Summers County," said PikeView coach Bobby Wyatt said.
"I told them that they can't start as a visiting team like that. After we settled down, it was 19-0. We were doing good until the fumbled punt. It should've been a closer game. They shut down our running game and destroyed everything we wanted to do offensively."
The Panthers (1-1) will host Liberty on Friday, while Independence (2-0) will host Mount View.
