PEARISBURG, Va. — The Giles Spartans continued their undefeated season on Friday night in impressive fashion by dominating the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs 76-12.
It was Giles’ 22nd straight win, improving 7-0 on the season.
The 76 points was a school record for the Spartans. The previous mark was 65.
Giles struck quick, recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff, followed a 3-yard scoring run by Brian Mann. Brett Whitlow added the extra point, and the rout was on.
In fact, Giles led 21-10 just 1:10 into the game, and 35-0 with 7:04 remaining in the first quarter.
Giles took advantage of nine turnovers, including five interceptions and four fumble recoveries.
Eastern Montgomery fumbled again on its next possession, and Patrick Beidleman ran 25 yards for another score. That was followed by another turnover, and Whitlow dashed 86 yards for the 21-0 lead.
It only got worst for the Mustangs, with Hunter Smith picking off a pass, leading to a 12-yard run by Mann, who would scored again 1:04 later on a 3-yard run. Giles would make it 42-0 after a one quarter on a 22-yard run by John Teats.
It was more of the same in the next quarter, as Whitlow scored from 8 yards out after another Mustangs’ turnover. Finally, Eastern Montgomery was forced to punt, and Spartans quickly took advantage, with Whitlow scoring from 61 yards for 55-0 lead.
Eastern Montgomery (3-4) finally got a positive play on the ensuing kick, with Dustin Sledd returning the kick 97 yards for a touchdown.
Giles answered with two more score, a 29-yard by Whitlow and a 5-yard score from Brandon Chapman, giving the Spartans a 69-6 lead at the break.
Both teams scored once apiece after the break, both in the fourth quarter.
Michael Waltz scored on a 41-yard pass by Jesse East, and the Spartans countered with a 5-yard run by Chapman.
Giles finished up the game with its fifth interception of the game, this time by Ty Ratcliffe.
Whitlow led the Spartans with 200 yards and four touchdowns. Beidleman had 91 yards and a score. Sledd led the Mustangs with 62 yards, while East threw for 62 yards, but also had five interceptions.
