WELCH — Mount View and Liberty Raleigh rolled up a combined 757 yards Friday night, including 492 through the air, in a wild-scoring match at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
The visiting Raiders improved to 3-1 with a 42-26 victory over the winless Golden Knights, who dropped their fourth contest of the 2012 campaign and their 31st in a row, dating back to 2009.
Teddy Hazzard coinmpleted 14 of 23 pass tries for the View for 290 yards and four scores, while freshman Hunter Wright connected on 8 of 11 passes for 147 yards and a pair of TDs for the Raiders.
Joey Lacek went 5 of 6 for 55 yards and one score, while adding three six-pointers himself, including two rushing and another on a pass reception.
Liberty scored on its initial two series to take an early 14-0 lead.
Lacek scooted around left end from 12 yards out with 6:34 showing in the opening chapter, to cap an eight-play, 43-yard drive.
Following a Matthew Bailey pass interception, Wright passed 40 yards to Lacek down the right sideline for a second TD at the 4:36 mark. Josh Brown added both PAT kicks.
The View lit the scoreboard with 30 seconds left in the first on a Hazzard 17-yard pass to Tashaan Vineyard to cut the deficit to 14-6 after one quarter. The extra point try failed.
Wright’s strike from 20 yards out to Jake Lacek with 7:44 remaining before halftime extended the advantage to 21-6. Hazzard hooked up with Maurice Brown on a 41-yard pass-and-run touchdown with 3:13 showing before the break to make the score 21-12 at intermission.
Brown would end his evening’s work with seven catches for 141 yards and two TDs. Lacek threw to Bailey on an eight-yard scoring aerial to open the third, capping a nine-play 53-yard march.
Both teams scored twice in the final period. Bailey’s one-yard dive extended the lead to 35-12 before Hazzard and Brown connected for a one-yard score.
Lacek concluded the Raiders’ scoring with 6:15 left in the game on a one-yard run, and Juwan Diggs did likewise for the Knights with 2:51 showing, on a 61-yard pass from Hazzard.
Raider head coach Jeff Alexander praised the Knights after the game.
“These guys have a lot of talent, a lot of speed,” he said. “A couple of things went against them early.”
The difference in the offensive assaults was that the Golden Knights turned the ball over four times, three on pass interceptions and another on a lost fumble, while Liberty did not have any turnovers.
Related Golden Knights first-year head coach Todd McCoy, “We had some breakdowns. We had some young guys in there who made some mistakes.”
The Knights will entertain Wyoming East next Friday night, while the Raiders return home to host Sherman.
