LEBANON, Va. — Doggone.
Trevor Owens kicked a 23-yard field goal in the third overtime to propel Lebanon to a 17-14 win Friday. Tazewell (0-5) led in total yards, first downs and time of possession, but to no avail as the Pioneers (2-4) won where it counted — on the scoreboard.
Malik Davis tied the score at 7-7 with 16 seconds left in the game on a two-yard run and gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the season with a three-yard run in the first overtime. Leading 14-7 the Bulldogs surrendered a 16-yard touchdown pass on third and 16 from John Duty to a leaping Eric Eades on the back line of the endzone.
In the next two overtimes Tazewell missed two field goals and Lebanon one before Owens hit the game winner. Matthew Hurd scored on a 37-yard run in the second quarter and Lebanon held their lead until the final minute of the fourth stanza.
The Bulldogs moved upfield on a 35-yard pass reception from Cody McCann to Nick Blankenship followed by a 29-yard pass to Jessee Mountain which put the ball on the two, where Davis plowed in for the score.
Tazewell outgained Lebanon 259-98 in total yards and led 14-3 in first downs. Lebanon did not have a first down over the last two quarters.
The Dogs fumbled at the one yard line in the first quarter to lose a scoring threat and were unable to get points after another pair of fumbles in the second half came at the end of first down runs costing THS scoring opportunities.
Defensively, Mikey Wright, Guy Turner, Davis, Nick Goad and McCann were among the stars who battled so hard, but in the end it was the equally determined Pioneers who finished with a happy homecoming victory.
Tazewell will host the Virginia High Bearcats on Oct. 5 in their homecoming.
