PIKEVILLE, Ky. — There were plenty of touches to go around in Hurley's deep and talented backfield.
The biggest ones Saturday were carried out by Tray Oliver.
The speedy senior scored four touchdowns to lead the Rebels to a 36-15 win over East Ridge (Ky.) in the 30th annual Pike County Bowl at Hillard Howard Field.
Oliver was named Hurley MVP for the second year in a row at the event, which features six games in two days at three different sites.
He ran 13 times for 118 yards and three touchdowns and capped his big night by hauling in a throw from Zack Lester around the East Ridge 30 and maneuvering through several defenders to complete a 43-yard touchdown pass.
Brady Justice added 70 yards on 11 carries, Nelson Mullins ran nine times for 67 yards and Devin Tester contributed 56 yards and a touchdown on seven touches for the Rebels, who had success most of the night running inside and out.
"We have a number of guys who can run the ball well," Hurley coach Greg Tester said. "We just try and keep them fresh and rotate them in and out.
"When we were running our jets they were stacking them outside and we hit our traps with Brady and Devin up the middle. Then when they squeezed back down we tried to come back to the outside with Tray and Devin. Tray did a great job, so did Devin and Brady and Nelson Mullins did a great job for us too."
Hurley got its first two scores, on a 37-yard run by Oliver and a 9-yard run by Tester, after East Ridge fumbles in the first period. A bad punt snap by the Warriors later set the Rebels up on the ER 40 midway through the second quarter. Oliver made it 20-0 with another 7-yard TD run six plays later.
Neither team scored again until a 55-yard East Ridge drive capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass from Brodie Johnson to Trey Little that made it 20-7 with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter.
Oliver quickly to work on the next series, rushing for 62 yards on three carries to set up his third TD, a 6-yard run with 1:24 left in the period.
"We started out real strong, but our kids got a little laid back when we got up 20-0," Tester said. "I think we took our foot off the pedal and allowed East Ridge to come up with a score or two and lost our intensity near the end of the first half.
"We talked at halftime about getting it back, but give East Ridge some credit too, theu fought back."
