CLEAR FORK — Offense, and plenty of it, was showcased Friday night at Westside High School as the No. 4-rated class AA Renegades out-dueled the No. 6-ranked Riverview Raiders 48-40.
In addition to those 88 combined points, the two class AA powers combined for 1,036 yards of total offense.
Of the combined 13 TDs, nine came from 16 yards or longer, with three of those being from 68, 80, and 70 yards respectively.
Riverview came out with a flourish offensively, scoring on three of its first four possessions, to take a 18-6 lead with 11:11 left in the second period.
Sophomore Joseph McClanahan reeled off an 18 yarder to open the scoring marathon with 9:06 remaining in the inaugural chapter.
Senior Justin Tilley scored 45 seconds later, skirting right tackle for a 68 yard gallop to tie the count at six.
McClanahan found the end zone again with three minutes left in the first on a 21-yard jaunt that was finished with a nice stutter-step move at the five to gain entrance into the endzone.
On the second play of the second quarter, freshman Jordan Wilson broke off the left side for an 80-yard score to put the Raider lead at 18-6.
Renegade senior Thomas Forren, who ran the pig skin 23 times for 172 yards on the evening, scored the first of his two sixes on a 1-yard run with 8:40 remaining in the second, and after freshman Justin Cogar’s conversion keeper, the view lead was cut to 18-14.
Forren also scored the go-ahead points with 1:13 showing before intermission on a 3-yard rambler up the middle.
Cogar again ran the extra points to give Westside, now 9-1, a 22-18 advantage at the break.
Dustin Tilley scored on runs of 4, 16, 9 and 17 yards in the second half to lead the Westside offense to the win.
Trailing 48-26 with 6:22 left in the contest, the Raiders fought back for 14 unanswered points on a Jacob Muncy to Chad Franklin pass from 39 yards out and a Muncy to Wilson strike from the Renegade 21.
Muncy completed 12 of 21 passes for 238 yards and three scores for Riverview, now 8-2, now locked into a playoff birth next week.
Wilson had 13 rushes for 124 yards for the View, while McClanahan finished with 78 yards on 11 attempts.
Related Riverview head coach Mitch Estep, “They’re (Westside) a good football team, strong and powerful. The biggest thing is we have to get guys healthy.”
(Starters Trey Bailey, Austin Walker, and Brandon Church did not dress due to injuries, and another starting running back, John Bailey, went out before the half with a collar bone injury.)
Remarked Renegade head coach Darren Thomas, “Two good football teams. These guys have battled all year long. We got down 18-6 and made a few adjustments and got back into the football game.”
Pairings for the playoffs will be announced after a meeting in Parkersburg on Sunday.
