GRUNDY, Va. — It wasn't exactly a homecoming to remember for Grundy.
Shelby Valley dominated the Golden Wave in the second half and handed it a 50-26 thumping Friday night at Nelson Memorial Field.
Wingbacks Kasey Tackett and Owen Caudill each scored three touchdowns for the Wildcats, who used a series of big runs to overcome an 18-15 halftime deficit.
Shelby Valley (4-3) had four scoring runs of 44 or more yards, three of them in the second half when the Wildcats ran for 320 yards on just 20 attempts.
Grundy got several good individual defensive efforts from Dylan Raines, Trey Smith and Brady McClanahan, but missed tackle after tackle, especially in the second half.
"We have to tackle better we have to block better, we have to play better football," Grundy coach Jeremy Ward said. "We can't sit back and let things happen, we have to learn to make things happen."
The Wave have given up 177 points in its last three games and Friday's effort overshadowed a great game by Smith.
The senior scored all four Wave touchdowns, two on short runs in the first half and on two great catches at or near the goal line, including a 43-yard TD pass from Charles McCoy that gave Grundy its only lead with seven seconds remaining in the first half.
Smith finished with 139 all-purpose yards.
Grundy has an open date next week.
