LINDSIDE — James Monroe Mavericks players and fans will not soon forget Friday’s homecoming night, with the Mavericks defeating the PikeView Panthers 57-13.
The Mavericks struck on the first possession of the game with a touchdown pass from quarterback Reed McNeer to Matthew Elmore.
James Monroe picked up a first down on a fourth and 2, leading to a 27-yard field goal by Seth Havens.
PikeView’s next possession ended with a blocked punt, with Devin Johnson taking the ball off of the foot of the Panthers’ punter and returning it for a touchdown.
Keian Lee hauled in a 55-yard scoring pass from Justin Hopper for PikeView’s only points of the first half.
At the end of the first quarter the Panthers picked off McNeer, giving PikeView good field position at their own 47 but the Mavericks again forced a punt. James Monroe muffed the catch and the Panthers recovered the ball on the Mavericks’ 24-yard line.
The Mavericks defense stood firm as Steven Pack and Parker King sacked Hopper, forcing the Panthers to attempt a field goal, but the kick was no good.
Late in the second quarter, the Mavericks recovered a fumble by the Panthers at the PikeView 14. McNeer completed another touchdown pass with Evan Beasley on the receiving end and James Monroe led 21-6 at halftime.
The Mavericks’ Landan Shires blocked a Panthers punt giving James Monroe a first down on the PikeView 33 yard line. Grant Mohler capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. He found the end zone again a few minutes later on a 1-yard run.
McNeer found Josh Dransfield again on a 80-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.
Mohler opened up the final period with a 15-yard run for another touchdown.
Daniel Brown for PikeView got loose on a 65 yard run to give the Panthers another seven points with 10:05 remaining in the game.
The Mavericks closed it out with another touchdown on Lance Wilson’s 36-yard pass reception from Conner Moore, and a two-point conversion.
Mohler and Logan Honeycutt rushed for 100 yards each.
McNeer had another big game passing for 183 yards and three touchdowns.
