BRADSHAW — After spotting the visiting James Monroe Mavericks a pair of scores in just 23 seconds early in the second quarter last night, the River View Raider offense shook off a slow start, tallying 28 points over the last 30 minutes to take a 28-12 victory in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Neither team could light the scoreboard in the opening chapter, but when the now 4-1 Raiders failed to pick up a first down on a fourth-and-one at the River View 31, the Mavs were the receipients of a short field that led to the initial TD of the contest.
Following the stop, Micah Deskins picked up four yards before junior Brian Young negotiated the final 27 yards on an end around for a 6-0 James Monroe lead with 9:50 showing in the half.
On the ensuing kickoff, the football bounced away from a would-be Raider returner at the View 26 and an alert James Monroe team pounced on the football to take possession at that spot.
Striking quickly, sophomore quarterback Reed McNeer passed to John Mustain for a 24 yard gain before Deskins found the endzone from two yards out at the 9:27 mark on a burst up the middle.
Speaking of the early deficit, River View head coach Mitchell Estep related, "We didn't go out and play with much intensity. Defensively we didn't play that bad, but offensively, we just didn't move the ball."
The Raiders did mount a seven play, 61 yard march to get on the scoreboard themselves less than four minutes later.
Junior Joseph McClanahan scored on a two yard dive with 5:55 remaining to cut the deficit to 12-6. The big play in that march was a 45 yard ramble by sophomore Jordan Wilson that carried from the View 48 to the Maverick 7.
James Monroe opened the second half with a 15 play, 57 yard drive that consumed 6:12 off the third quarter clock, but ended on downs at the River View 19.
The hosts tied the score quickly, using only five plays to travel 81 yards, with the final 47 coming on an Austin Walker strike to Brandon Thomas over the middle. Thomas outran two Maverick defenders in finding the end zone and knotting the count at 12 with 3:49 remaining in the third.
Following a second defensive stop of the second half, River View took the pigskin at its own 15 late in the third.
This time, it was the Raiders who embarked on a long march that would give them the advantage for keeps.
Walker and Company methodically drove the 85 yards in 15 plays, twice converting third down plays and once gaining a first down on fourth, with McClanahan scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 5:55 remaining on a 7 yard run up the middle.
Walker ran for the conversion and a 20-12 lead.
After the RV defense again stopped the Mavs with 4:15 left in the contest, the Raiders attempted to run out the clock, but faced a fourth and 13 at the James Monroe 35.
After deciding to punt, the long snapper wasn't on the field, forcing the View to use a timeout.
Following the break, Walker passed to Ryan Blankenship over the middle for a 35 yard score that iced the game at the 2:12 mark. Walker and Thomas again hooked up for the extra points and the final 28-12 score.
Analyzed Maverick head coach Don Jackson of his young team, "I ask them as a coach to get better every day and from our last game, we've gotten better. ... I was pleased with our effort...They (Raiders) have a good team and have a good tradition here."
James Monroe, now 2-3, will face Chapmanville next Friday, while the Raiders travel to Wyoming East.
