OAK HILL — A season that began with high hopes, if not some trepidation, ended on a high note for Oak Hill Friday night.
The Red Devils, in year one of merging together with Mount Hope, took advantage of early field position and parlayed four turnovers into points in a 58-12 win over PikeView at muddy John P. Duda Stadium on Senior Night.
And a couple of seniors led the way.
“I never thought I’d end my career in an Oak Hill uniform,” Gray said. “But it was good. We came together. We’re all brothers. We’ve known each other for so long anyway. I had my doubts about it but now I love it.”
“It was nice to be a part of history,” said Coats, who scored his third touchdown of the seaosn and added a two-point conversion. “And I was able to get back in the end zone, it had been awhile. These guys, we’re all close. We’re all family.”
The seniiors joined hands and walked together down the middle of the field at the conclusion of the game and sang the two schools’ fight songs.
The game got out of hand early.
If PikeView brought a punter, he likely didn’t see much action.
The Panthers made it evident early that a team received four downs to get a first down and coach Jeff Damewood was going to use them all.
Oak Hill twice stopped the Panthers on downs and also used a Demetri Gray interceptions to take an early 22-0 lead en route to the blowout.
“They came to play,” Oak Hill coach Eddie Souk said of PikeView. “We were able to take advantage of a couple of situations and that tilted the advantage to us. I’m proud of the kids for coming out and playing hard.”
Gray scored on a 6-yard run, Ray Sullivan added a 5 yard run and Sean Bunting caught a 61-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Adam Lowe as the Red Devils surged to the lead.
Two of the scores came after PikeView turned the ball over on downs.
“We had some key players injured and we knew if we were going to have a chance, we weren’t going to punt the ball,” Damewood said. “When you play in conditions like this you have to take chances. We didn’t have anything to lose.”
After quarteback David Keene found Brandon Hazelwood behind the Oak Hill secondary for a 35-yard scoring strike, sophomore Jalen Jones (7-104-2) scored on a 7-yard run to make it 30-6 at the break.
PikeView, still pressing, recovered an onside kick to start the second half and Keene, the stalwart for the Panthers all season, scored one a 1-yard run.
But that was as close as the Panthers would get.
Coats and Jones scored back-to-back touchdowns to put the game well out of hand.
In the fourth quarter Souk went to his bench and K.K. Goodman and Dakota Miller finished off the scoring.
“There hasn’t been one bit of problem in this lockerroom,” Souk said. “These kids, once they learned our blocking scheme and what we wanted, they were competitive with every team we played. I’m proud of the entire team.”
Oak Hill finished the season 4-5.
PikeView concludes its season next week against Midland Trail.
