MARION, Va. — Big plays — good and bad.
Ethan Richardson scored five touchdowns on 251 yards rushing and led Marion to a 38-18 Southwest District victory over Tazewell Friday.
Bulldog freshman quarterback Nick Elkins completed 17-of-34 passes for 235 yards, including 10 completions to Jalen Jordan for 148 yards. Jordan caught a 62-yard touchdown strike from Elkins.
Jacob McReynolds scored twice for Tazewell for the Bulldogs (0-7, 0-2) and Marion broke a three-game losing streak, improving to 4-4 and 1-1 in the SWD.
At one stretch the teams exchanged turnovers seven times in 10 series.
Tazewell piled up 311 yards in total offense, including 252 passing as Marion gained 316 overall, with 297 on the ground.
The Bulldogs were penalized twice for seven yards and Marion was hit with 11 yellow flags with 113 yards.
Diantae Cecil recovered two fumbles for Tazewell, Jordan intercepted two passes and Carter Rasnick had a fumble recovery, which set up the Bulldogs first touchdown.
Colin Guillion had two interceptions for Marion.
Isaac Glass put the Scarlet Hurricane up for good with a 28-yard field goal with 7:15 to go in the opening quarter. Richardson then ran 46 yards for a touchdown to put Marion 10-0 with 4:20 left in the period after Glass added the extra point kick.
Richardson got his second touchdown on a 1-yard plunge with 50 seconds before halftime following a fumble recovery by Marion’s Trey Crook on Tazewell’s 14-yard line.
In the third stanza, Richardson increased the Hurricane margin with a 67-yard scoring scamper at the 8:34 mark.
Rasnick recovered a Marion fumble and returned to the ‘Canes’ 24 one series later. Elkins hit Jordan for 27 yards and McReynolds bolted over for a 4-yard Tazewell touchdown to put the Bulldogs on the board with 2:44 in the third quarter. The two-point try failed, leaving the ‘Dogs behind 24-6.
Richardson’s fourth touchdown came from 1-yard out with 46 seconds to play in the third and gave him 110 yards rushing in the third quarter.
Elkins fired a 62-yard scoring pass to Jordan with 6:53 remaining in the game, but again the Bulldogs misfired on the try for two.
Richardson answered with a 61-yard touchdown run at the 5:47 mark and Glass again kicked the extra point.
Tazewell’s final touchdown came on a 7-yard run by McReynolds with 1:21 on the clock. The score capped an 8-play, 68-yard match with all but seven of those yards coming through the air.
