LICK CREEK, Ky. — After taking weeks of criticism Grundy's defense earned a little praise Friday night.
The Golden Wave picked off two passes in the fourth quarter to preserve a 32-22 come-from-behind win at East Ridge (Ky.).
Brady McClanahan scored two touchdowns, the final two of the game, including a 19-yard run that tied the score at 22-22. Trey Smith's two-point conversion run gave the Wave (3-4) the lead for good at the 10:22 mark.
McClanahan, Maverick Coleman and Trey Smith all had interceptions for Grundy. Austin Hurley had two picks that were waved off by questionable penalties against the Wave.
Coleman's pick stopped an East Ridge drive at the goal line with 3:44 remaining. McClanahan returned the final pick 60 yards for an insurance touchdown with 1:21 left on the clock.
"I'm proud of the kids," Grundy coach Jeremy Ward said. "They stepped it up on defense and started attacking the football.
"We still have to work on our tackling but they did a much better job tonight. They came up with some big plays."
Baylen Dillow capped Grundy's 96-yard scoring drive in the second quarter with a one-yard TD run.
The key plays included Dillow's first down run on a fake punt on fourth down at the Wave's own 28-yard line and a 39-yard pass from McCoy to Dylan Wolford.
In the third quarter McCoy threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Raines who made a nice catch on the left sideline.
East Ridge (5-3) took a 22-14 lead on an 82-yard kickoff return from Jacob Skeens to open the second half.
