ABINGDON, Va. — Nobody told Grant Pennings it was Senior Night.
Abingdon’s junior standout scored three times and gained 270 yards on 33 carries, and that was enough to push the Falcons to a 29-0 Southwest District victory over Tazewell Friday.
On the wet, windy night at Falcon Field, Abingdon (3-6, 1-2 SWD) battled through a scoreless first quarter against the Bulldogs (0-9, 0-3).
Pennings, who set up a first and goal at the 6 with a 46-yard run to open the second quarter, went over for the score to cap a seven-play, 95-yard march. The touchdown came with 9:32 before halftime.
Mitchell Ludwig picked up a bobbled snap, rolled right and tossed a two-point conversion to Grayson Toler to make the score 8-0.
Pennings scored his second touchdown on a 19-yard scamper with 6:59 left before the break and Ludwig booted the point after for a 15-0 advantage.
The third Falcon score was a 3-yard burst by Pennings with 6:25 left in the third stanza. Ludwig’s extra point upped the margin to 22-0 and was the conclusion of a six-play, 38-yard drive as the Falcons played most of the evening in Tazewell territory.
Adam Hickman, who is a senior, put the final touchdown on the board when he bolted five yards for a score with 5:54 left in the contest. Ludwig again drilled the PAT.
Abingdon outgained Tazewell 349 yards to 32. The Bulldogs attempted three passes as did Abingdon, and the Falcons completed one for eight yards.
All of Tazewell’s passes were incomplete.
Jarred Ball was the leading rusher for the Bulldogs, with 30 yards.
Defensively, Tazewell played well and did not draw a penalty until the closing minutes of the third quarter. Ball, Kyle Sheets, Ryan Hankins, Mikey Wright, Alex Griffith and Steven Wright all had solid efforts for the Bulldogs.
Tazewell concludes the season at home this Friday, playing Richlands.
