GRUNDY, Va. — Grundy owned the ball and the clock in the first half.
East Ridge’s slick play-calling took over in the second half and ruined the Golden Wave homecoming with a 22-14 come-from-behind win Friday night at Nelson Memorial Field.
The Warriors’ Brody Johnson tossed a 56-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Kaleb Fields with 1:19 remaining to break a 14-14 tie.
Dylan Wolford threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Cole Street and Wolford added a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter as Grundy (0-7) scored twice in the period to take a 14-0 halftime lead.
East Ridge (3-5) earned its first win ever over the Golden Wave with three second-half scores and offset a 102-yard rushing effort by Grundy freshman Jacob McNutt.
A 20-yard punt return by Trey Little set up the first Warrior touchdown, a 2-yard run by Barry Young early in the third quarter.
Little then made two nice cutbacks on a draw play to go 58 yards for a TD. Young’s two-point conversion run tied the score at 14-14 with 4:21 left in the period.
Grundy saw its second possession of the night end on downs in East Ridge territory and another end near midfield. The latter set up the game-winner.
The Warriors caught the Grundy defense off-guard again and trying to shift its defense around on the long TD pass to Fields.
Grundy has next weekend off and hosts Tazewell on Oct. 24 and Honaker on Oct. 30.
