HONAKER, Va. — The Honaker Tigers remained perfect on the season Saturday afternoon, winning their fifth straight game.
Due to a problem with the lights, Homecoming 2012 was delayed at EMATS Stadium for a day. There was still a lot to celebrate as Honaker shut out Twin Valley 43-0 in Black Diamond District play.
“The kids did what we needed to do,” Honaker coach Doug Hubbard said. “They came out and executed, we just played ball.
“Give Twin Valley credit, they kept trying and plugging away. We were just a little faster, stronger and bigger, that was the difference.”
The only thing that stopped the Tigers was a fumble. On Honaker’s fourth possession they fumbled and it was recovered by Twin Valley’s Shannon Adams. The Tigers other seven possessions resulted in six touchdowns and a field goal before time ran out in the first half.
“Playing Honaker, they have 48 kids and I have 18,” said Twin Valley coach Tommy Crigger. “That’s what we’re battling right now. My kids came out and played hard, we could have laid down early but we fought and did some good things.”
It was hard for the Panthers to get anything established against the massive defensive front of Honaker. They couldn’t get anything going inside against the Tigers, but had some limited success with the running game outside.
Adams had 46 yards rushing for the Panthers and Adam Quinley added 42 yards on the ground.
Twin Valley did come close to scoring in the second quarter. They put together a 10-play drive, but on 4th-and-goal from the Honaker two, running back Jake Kowalsi was stopped inches short of the goal line.
“I’m happy,” Crigger said. “I told the kids this was our playoff game. They are played on Saturday afternoon.
“We’re trying to develop, we have 17 on the 8th-9th grade team and we’re just trying to teach these kids to play football.”
After a deep run into the playoffs last year, the undefeated Tigers have high hopes for this season. But a tough schedule remains beginning with a road trip to Richlands next Friday.
“The big key for us is to get healthy,” stated Hubbard. “We got Payton Ball back a little on offense today and we got Landon Miller back that will give us some depth at linebacker. We’re starting to get some kids healthy and that will be the key to our stretch run.
“I’m pretty happy with where we’re at and how we’re doing. We’ll find out a little more about ourselves after (Richlands) next week.”
Quarterback Ty Hall had another outstanding game for Honaker. He was 8-of-19 passing for 186 yards. He threw a 68-yard scoring strike to Randy Horton and a 9-yard TD pass to Mackenzie Phillips. He completed passes to six different receivers.
The Tigers amassed 240 yards on the ground. Ball had 76 yards on only four carries. Blake Ray added 47 yards on three carries. Cody Lester, Ray and Austin Smith had rushing touchdowns.
Backup quarterback Jordan Smith also hit tight end Casey Harmon with an 8-yard TD pass for the Tigers’ final score.
While Honaker travels to Richlands, Twin Valley will play at Phelps, Kentucky next week.
