WELCH — A high octane Summers County Bobcat offense combined with a pass stealing defense to build a 47-0 halftime lead last night before heading back to Hinton with a 61-8 win over the Mount View Golden Knights on a chilly evening at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
Seniors Isaiah Brown and T. J. Smith scored three times apiece, while fellow twelfth grader Erik Lindsey lit the scoreboard on two first half occasions.
The fourth rated Class AA Bobcats ran only eighteen offensive plays in the opening two quarters, and scored on six of those snaps.
Fourteen of those plays were runs that netted 131 yards, while sophomore quarterback Matt Ryan completed three-of-four passes, all for touchdowns and 69 yards.
Defensively, Summers, now 8-1, picked off four Knight passes, including a pair by Ryan and one that was returned for a TD by Lindsey. Senior Sean Willey intercepted the other pass try.
The View ran the pigskin 24 times in the first half, collecting only 17 yards.
“The game plan was to come out quick and be more physical than they were, and the kids executed the game plan very well,” analyzed first year Bobcat head coach Nate Tanner.
After Ryan stopped the Knights initial series with a pick, Brown wasted little time in galloping 30 yards around right end after taking a pitchout on Summers County’s initial play for a quick 6-0 advantage.
A View punt set up Smith’s inaugural score, that came at the 2:49 mark of the first on an 11 yard jaunt around left end.
Smith passed to a wide open Ryan for the conversion and a 14-0 lead.
Ryan’s second pick set the stage for a pass from Ryan to Lindsey of 8 yards to open the second frame, extending the score to 21-0 after Tristan Sears kicked the PAT.
Willey’s interception gave the visitors the football at the Golden Knight 30 and following a nine yard loss on first down, Ryan hooked up with a streaking Brown down the left sideline for the 39 yard TD, at the 9:55 mark of the second.
Next Knight series, same result, as Lindsey snared an errant pass at the View 41 and returned for a 33-0 advantage with 9:21 left before the break.
Continued Coach Tanner of the quick Bobcat scores, “I think a lot of those big plays on defense set us up with a short field offensively.”
A Smith pitchout ramble around left end from 16 yards out swelled the advantage to 40-0, with Sears’ conversion boot at the 4:15 mark.
Ryan tossed to Brown over the middle for a 22 yard bellringer with 1:46 showing, extending the score to 47-0, as Sears again added the kick.
Smith took a pitch, started left and then reversed at the 6:47 mark of the third to record a 25 yard score.
The final Bobcat points of the night came with 36 ticks remaining in the Homecoming game when freshman Dillon Smith burst 7 yards up the middle and Sears’ kick was again true for a 61-0 lead.
Mount View avoided the shutout when junior Andrew Hazzard fielded the ensuing kickoff at his own 29 and raced up the middle before cutting right to cap a 71 yard return that resulted in a touchdown.
LaQuell Martin ran the extra points for the final 61-8 count.
The Knights fall to 1-7 with the loss and will entertain Westside next week.
Summers County will travel to Richwood to close out the regular season, with a spot in the playoffs looming.
