TAZEWELL, Va. –– It was Bear-down time for the Bruins. Hard-running Will Ingram scored twice and picked up 118 rushing yards as the catalyst for Blacksburg’s 27-8 non-district triumph over the Tazewell Bulldogs Friday. Bruin kicker Carson Wise added field goals of 36 and 31 yards in the second half as Blacksburg (1-2) broke the winless skein between the two while THS (0-3) dropped its 14 consecutive decision.
Tazewell’s score came in dramatic fashion with 11:02 to play in the final period. On 4th-and-9 from the B-Burg 26-yard line, Dog quarterback Cody McCann dropped back and fired a strike to Jalen Jordan down the middle. Jordan grabbed the ball at the four and twisted his way over the goal line for the touchdown.
The Bulldogs got two – in two plays. Malik Davis tossed a conversion attempt toward McCann who was hit on a horsecollar tackle as the ball dropped to the ground. On the second try, Davis bounded in for the conversion.
Ingram scored first for Blacksburg, after the Bruins’ Parker Robinson set up the 10-play drive with a fumble recovery. Ingram zoomed in from nine yards away and Wise boomed the PAT through for a 7-0 margin. Three times during the march on third down, the Bruins converted first downs by inches to keep the drive alive.
Ingram added a 7-yard TD run with 9:10 to play before halftime. Wise kicked the extra point to cap a seven play/55-yard march. The 170-lb. jr. runner picked up 46 yards individually in the series as the Bruins went ahead 14-0.
The Bruins tacked on another score in third period when BHS quarterback Kaleb Bohrnstedt found receiver Jon Hefta open just inside the left goal line with 9:43 to go. Wise’s kick again split the uprights to increase the margin to 21-0.
Wise, who boomed five kicks into the end zone for touchbacks, nailed a 36-yard field to increase the edge to 24 before McCann and Jordan put Tazewell on the board. Wise’s final field goal closed the scoring with 4:57 to play.
Despite the loss, the youthful Bulldogs again showed improvement, cutting down on both turnovers and penalties from the previous two games. Coach Shane Allen's squad had a strong four-quarter effort.
Jacob McReynolds had a solid all-around game for the Bulldogs as he carried 11 times for 59 yards, hit some booming punts including one 56-yarder that was canceled on a Blacksburg penalty as the Dogs got the ball back, and also had a fumble recovery on defense. McCann had 101 yards passing including five completions for 62 yards to Jordan and one score.
Bohrnstedt completed 9-of-16 aerials for 164 yards and a touchdown. Darnell Golson was a force on defense for Blacksburg, had an interception at midfield and also caught a 47-yard pass just before halftime. C.J. Linkous also had a fumble recovery for the Bruins.
Mikey Wright was among the leading tacklers for the Bulldogs, while both Nick Goad and McCann had effective defensive efforts.
Blacksburg led Tazewell in total yardage, 302-155 and the Bruins held an 11-10 edge in first downs. Each team finished with three penalties for 15 yards.
Tazewell is open this week and will return to action on September 21 at Giles.
