GRUNDY, Va. — Grundy had the ball with a chance to take lead late in the first half when things took a sudden and complete turn.
Honaker scored three touchdowns in a span of 99 seconds and pulled away to a 55-21 Black Diamond District win over the Golden Wave Friday night at Nelson Memorial Field.
The triumph sets up Honaker’s annual showdown with Haysi for the BDD title. Honaker will host the Tigers on Nov. 3.
Those two clubs have won outright or shared the last 19 BDD crowns.
Seven different players scored touchdowns for Honaker, which amassed 562 yards in total offense, including 415 yards rushing.
The final minutes of the first half, meanwhile, gave the Tigers their huge margin of victory.
A blocked punt started the Tigers on a stunning, 22-points-in-99 seconds run, that gave them a 42-14 halftime lead, a stretch that included two touchdowns just 15 seconds apart.
Ty Hall was 11-of-13 passing for 147 yards and three touchdowns, all in the final 2:30 of the first half.
Hall threw two TD passes to Randy Horton in that span, including a 15-yarder after the punt block.
Grundy then turned the ball over on downs and Hall capped a quick 3-play, 53-yard drive with a 29-yard scoring strike to Shay Bunn with 1:06 left in the half.
Grundy, which turned the ball over three times from the line of scrimmage, lost the ball on the ensuing kickoff and Honaker scored its second touchdown 15 seconds later on Hall’s 20-yard pass to Horton.
The Golden Wave (3-6, 2-2) got 203 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Nick Travis, but could not slow down Honaker, even when the Tigers had a long field to negotiate.
Honaker (8-1, 3-0) got three TD runs of 61 or more yards.
Payton Ball scored from 61 yards out in the first quarter. Cody Lester sprinted 63 yards for a touchdown midway through the second period and Austin Smith added a 68-yard scoring run.
Ten different backs gained positive yardage for Honaker, led by Ball with 102 yards, Lester with an even 100 and Smith with 82 yards.
Grundy closes out the regular season at home Friday against Mount View.
