WELCH — Grundy was able to hold off Mount View 27-24 in a thriller on Friday night at Vic Nystrom Stadium.
Grundy’s Jake McCowan scored touchdowns of 6 and 3 yards and the Golden Wave was able to hold off the big-play Golden Knights to improve to 6-4 and secure a berth in next week’s postseason.
Mount View (0-10) was nearly able to end a long losing streak that reached 27 games.
Trey Huckleberry had a 90-yard kick return for Mount View to give them a 7-6 first quarter lead, and also took a pass from Teddy Hazzard and ran for a school record 94 yards for another score.
Mount View built the margin to 18-7 on a 34-yard scoring pass from Hazzard to Maurice Brown, a play set up by a forced fumble and recovery by Randall Johnson.
Grundy scored first on a 5-yard run by Ben Rife, and then had to score two late second quarter touchdowns to take a 21-18 lead at the break. Tyler McClanahan had a 17-yard touchdown run, and McCowan scored from 6 yards out.
The Golden Wave scored first in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by McCowan. Mount View pulled within the final margin on a 13-yard pass to Brown from Hazzard.
The Golden Knights drove the ball to Grundy’s 30-yard line in the final minutes, but turned the ball over on downs.
