NEW RICHMOND — "This was a crucial game for us coming off a big loss last week," remarked Wyoming East head coach Gary Poin-dexter Friday night after his Warriors has rolled to a 48-22 win over the visiting Mount View Golden Knights at the War Zone.
The Warriors, who led 21-8 at the break, scored in every quarter to pick up their fourth win in five starts.
Mount View snapped a 31-game losing streak last season with an 18-15 decision over East at Vic Nystrom Stadium, but that proved just a memory last evening, with the Warriors breaking an 8-all tie with 26 unanswered points in the win.
Analyzed Knight head coach Todd McCoy, "We were in it (game) at halftime, but we needed to punch in a score in the third, but we just didn't do it."
Wyoming East scored five times on rushes, another on a pass and yet another on a Jonathan Culicerto pass theft and 35 yard return.
Fireworks started early on Homecoming Night, as senior Coty Bishop opened the scoring with a two yard run with 8:30 left in the inaugural frame. Quarterback Aaron Griffith's conversion toss to Culicerto gave the Warriors a short-lived 8-0 advantage.
On the first snap of Mount View's ensuing series, last week's Pocahontas Coal Association/Bluefield Daily Telegraph Player of the Week LaQuell Martin took a handoff, skirted right end and broke several tackles in negotiating the 74 yards to paydirt, only 19 ticks after the Warrior TD.
Chris Muncy passed to Marlin Marrs for the extra points and the only tie of the game.
East took the lead for keeps with 7:02 left when Griffith tossed a 14 yard scoring strike to a wide open Christian Hedinger.
The Warriors scored a third time, capping a 9 play, 63 yard march, when Brian Whitt burst 4 yards up the middle with 10:46 showing before the halftime festivities.
On the Golden Knights' first possession of the second half, they moved to the East 17 before turning the ball over on downs.
Bishop's three yard ramble at the 4:53 mark, combined with a Tristan Jones PAT boot, put the Warrior advantage at 28-8.
Senior lineman Ryan Cantrell's one yard rush with less than 40 second showing in the third extended the lead to 34-8 before Muncy broke the string in the fourth on a 5 yard TD pass to Marquis Bonds.
Nik Walker broke a 47 yard run with 7:54 remaining for a 41-14 East lead before Culicerto picked off a pass and returned 35 yards less than four minutes later for the final WE points.
Jamari Perry capped the Knight scoring with 10 ticks remaining on a 32 yard jaunt around right end, followed by a Steve Brown-to-Jaquane Imes PAT pass.
Martin finished his night's work with 120 yards on the ground in 17 carries to pace the Golden Knight ground game. Perry chipped in 48 yards running the pigskin.
Jacob Summe, also a senior for East, paced his squad with 60 rushing yards, while Jacob Dulcie added 39.
Mount View, now 1-4, is open next week, while the Warriors travel to River View Friday night.
