BASTIAN, Va. — Despite battling leg cramps throughout the game, sophomore running back Isaiah Boyd turned in his second outstanding game of the season and helped lead the Bland County Bears to a 32-22 win over visiting Holston last Friday night in a non-district football battle.
The win by Bland County evened the Bears at 2-2 for the season and was its first win over the Cavaliers since 1993, breaking a seven-game losing streak on the on-again, off-again series between the two schools.
Boyd did most of his damage in the first half as the Bears built a 26-6 halftime advantage before going on to dropping the Cavaliers to 0-4 for the season. For the game, Boyd rushed for 113 yards on 10 carriers with one touchdown and added an 86-yard kickoff return for the score that gave the Bears an 18-6 edge. Boyd finished with 230 all-purpose yards, including 116 on returns.
Quarterback Mason Christian also had a good rushing right with 120 yards on 18 carries with a score and added a touchdown pass to senior teammate Zach Gywn in the fourth quarter. Christian completed three of his eight passes for 59 yards. Another sophomore, Dylan Jackson, had 78 yards rushing with a scoring run.
“After the loss last week to a real good Northwood team, we came back and had a really good week of practice,” the Bears' Harris Hart stated. “They came in and worked hard, didn't get down on themselves, and I think that effort was shown on the scoreboard tonight. We ran the ball well, we controlled the line of scrimmage better and turned in an all-around better performance.”
The win snapped a seven-game drought against Holston over the past several years. The win came largely in part on the efforts of Boyd and Christian on offense and good contributions by Hicks, Rose, and Wright on defense. Hicks finished with six solo tackles, six assists, and a sack. Rose had 11 tackles total, and Wright added five solos, five assists, and a sack. Jacob Parker and Christian chimed in with eight total takedowns each.
“It feels really good to get this win tonight and give Coach Hart his first ever win over Holston,” Boyd said. “The entire team worked hard this past week and I'm really proud of them as well as me being able to do my part in getting this win.”
The Cavaliers gained just 76 yards rushing with Snead leading the way with 40 yards on 10 carries. Davenport caught seven passes for Holston for 77 yards and Harding four for 76 yards. Holston was aided by 17 penalties on the Bears for 120 yards.
