HURLEY, Va. —- Tanner Charles didn't have a banner day on offense or defense, but he made what might have been the biggest play of the night on special teams.
Charles' 80-yard kickoff return late in the first half helped Hurley extend its lead and the Rebels pulled away in the second half to a 46-21 Black Diamond District win over Twin Valley Friday night at Smiley Ratliff Field at The Cliff.
It was the first BDD win of the year for Hurley, which will play on the road next week in the Group A, Division 1 Western Section playoffs. Twin Valley ended the season 1-9 overall and 0-4 in BDD play.
Dillion Bailey and Nick Gibson each scored three touchdowns for a Hurley offense that got all of its 281 yards on the ground. Gibson's second of three quarterback keepers for touchdowns, followed by the second of Traquan Oliver's three two-point conversion runs, gave the Rebels (6-4, 1-3) a 24-13 halftime lead.
"That kick return by Tanner was a big play for us," Hurley coach Greg Tester said. "That gave us a little breathing room."
The Panthers played hard and got within 16-13 on a 10-yard TD pass from Shannon Adams to Dalton Harris with 3:55 remaining in the first half. The subsequent kick return by Charles made Twin Valley play catchup against a bigger Hurley squad in the second half.
"The kick return and a bad snap on a punt in the second half killed us," Twin Valley coach Tommy Crigger said. "They eventually wore us down in in the second half, but giving them 16 points really hurt.
"Hurley is a good quality playoff team and to come from where we were, we've come a long way. I just hate it for Adam Quinley and my other seniors. Quinley is a good all-around football player and a great kid."
Quinley set up his own 3-yard TD run with a 68-yard run in the first quarter. He finished with 93 yards on nine carries, while Cameron Barbetto added 67 yards, 34 of them on a nice scoring run in the third period that got the Panthers within 30-21.
Bailey was a workhorse once again for the Rebels. After Gibson scored all three Hurley touchdowns in the first half Bailey scored all three of his TDs in the second half and finished with 21 carries for 146 yards.
"We did a good job with our running game," added Tester. "A bunch of kids made key plays or key blocks. Chris Hardin got a key interception for us and he kicked the ball well."
Hardin and Billy Stacy had interceptions for the Rebels. Harris had an interception for the Panthers.
