BASTIAN, Va. — Bland County ran its record to 2-0 for the season as it scored a 21-14 overtime win over Rural Retreat in Bastian. The Bears ran up 225 yards of total offense, all rushing, and was paced by Colton Slaughter with 74 yards on 13 carries and Dylan Jackson with 67 on 19 carries.
Quarterback Alec Taylor scored the winning touchdown with an eight yard run on the Bears' third play of overtime and freshman Ethan Buchanan booted the crucial extra point. On Rural Retreat's first snap of the extra session, Indians' quarterback Wyatt Sowers fumbled on a option pitch and Brian Arnold was there for the recovery.
Arnold helped force overtime for the Bears, who were trailing 14-6, by picking up another Sowers fumble and returning it three yards for the score at the 5:25 mark of the fourth period. Arnold then ran the PAT conversion to knot the game 14-14.
Rural Retreat had 192 rushing yards and 96 passing yards from Sowers. Jared Richardson and Hunter Ward each had 54 yards rushing for Rural Retreat, which had eight fumbles, including six by Sowers. The Indians lost six of those fumbles.
