GARDNER — The River View Raiders (2-6) came back from a 14 point first-quarter deficit to defeat the PikeView Panthers (2-6) Friday night at PikeView High School.
“This was a tough one to take,” said PikeView head coach Bobby Wyatt. “The kids fought hard and played hard. They did everything we asked them to do but we just came up a little short.”
The Raiders were led by Jordan Wilson who had 17 rushes for 144 yards and two touchdowns, and by Tyree Baker who had 10 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Price had success through the air going 12 of 24 for 159 yards for the Raiders.
PikeView’s Justin Hopper was 15 of 30 for 267 yards through the air with one touchdown and one interception.
Austin Cordell had five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown while Takota Bailey added seven catches for 96 yards. Joe Jennings had 14 rushes for 69 yards and two touchdowns.
Hopper connected with Cordell on a 59-yard reception that gave the Panthers first and goal early in the first quarter. Two plays later Cordell caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Hopper, and the extra point was converted.
PikeView would score again in the quarter on a four-play, 67-yard drive that was highlighted by a 44-yard reception by Keon Lee. A three-yard touchdown run by Adam Holdren put the Panthers up 14-0 with the converted extra point.
River View answered back in the second quarter as Baker broke free on an option play and scampered 61 yards for the touchdown. The two point conversion was successful.
In the third quarter the Raiders found the end zone again on a 15-yard run by Wilson. The two point conversion was good and the Raiders took the 16-14 lead that would hold into the fourth quarter.
The Panthers retook the lead on a two-yard touchdown run by Joe Jennings, but could not convert its two-point conversion try, and settled for a 20-16 lead.
River View answered right back with a 32-yard touchdown run. They would go for a two point conversion again but it was unsuccessful, producing a 22-20 lead.
The Raiders added to that lead with a nine-yard touchdown run by Baker. Again River View failed to convert the two point conversion and settled for the 28-20 lead that would still give the Panthers a chance.
PikeView drove down the field with a balanced attack through the air and on the ground and capped off the drive with a nine yard touchdown run by Joe Jennings with 1:01 to go in the ballgame.
PikeView failed to convert the two point conversion and trailed River View 28-26.
The Panthers tried an onside kick but River View recovered. PikeView had no timeouts left and River View was able to run out the clock.
“We had the chance to tie the game up at the end,” said Wyatt. “It’s one of those were either we make a play or they make a play and I guess they made the better play.
“I was very proud of our kids. In games past we would have just gave up when the other team scored there at the end but we were screaming to stop their two point conversion and we did. Then we drove down the field and scored and just couldn’t convert the two point conversion.”
“I think we came together tonight as a team better than we have all season, even going back to Summers County. I think we consistently played well all night long.”
