FAIRLEA — Class AA James Monroe scored 28 second-half points to rally past Class AAA Greenbrier East 42-38 on Friday night in a wild back-and-forth affair.
It was James Monroe’s first defeat of the Spartans since 2009.
The Mavericks (1-0) were led by the dynamic duo of Evan Beasley and Grant Mohler. Beasley rushed for 220 yards and scored three touchdowns (39, 73, 11), while Mohler rushed for 167 yards and also had three scores (75, 7, 1), all in the key second half.
The dramatic win for the Mavericks overshadowed a huge night from Zayvion Lawson from Greenbrier East. Lawson scored three touchdowns (6, 8, 75) and rushed for a single game Spartans record of 325 yards on 30 carries.
Lawson’s effort broke the record held by Seneca Wilmer who rushed for 283 yards against Shady Spring in 1996.
Greenbrier East (0-1) travels to Beckley Friday to face Woodrow Wilson, while James Monroe has a bye week.
